Feedback from small group crit.

Comment on the quality and the quantity of the images in development.

  • Roughs so far are good start- need cleaner image idea.
  • Imagery so far is effecive to convey the subject.
  • Look at poetry.
Comment whether the images in development work as a cohesive set/range/collection.
  • Distinct style - just rough more!
  • Look into old texts.
Gove constructive feedback on ways this project could be strengthened and developed for the interm crit next week.
  • Essays on sociology
  • Google Scholer.
  • Different newspapers/ different audiences.
I really need to get a shift on with this brief. I have been struggling with work balance , however i have just handed in my colaborative brief so, I can now hopefully have my full attention on this brief. I am going to create a new action plan to help organise myself and gather news articals together and estimate times i can have on each one.

Mega crit feedback -Responsive 503.

This was a really useful crit, as it was really good to see how others have designed there layout and how much text they have put onto there pages. I realised during the crit I had got project report mixed up with presentation boards. So I had put a tone of writing onto some of the pages in which I evaluated my finals and my process. The Presentation boards need to be short and snappy and more like a mood board of finals and roughs rather then an evaluation.
I also think overall the arrangement could be better, Some images can be stand alone on some pages, for example the batsford bird and more YCN posters.

Spelling is a big issue and something I really struggle with so I need to make sure I spell correct. Get serval different people to prof read the final texts.
Keeping the font size consistent as well would be a good idea and need to watch the size as well , the project titles could be smaller. I need to less afraid of space in this one. The images need to be able to be seen clearly and have breathing space.
Personal branding could also be an idea ? It seems to help the professionalism come through and goes that nexted level and create yourself into a brand.
Overall I am surprised at the amount of work I have produced for responsive , as I didn't think I made that much but actually I have created quite a substantial amount of work. And it was only when putting the work together did I see how much I have improved in the application of colour and several colour separation in screen print. It is a technique that I am very keen to keep and really improve on because I have a lot of ideas about how I could improve the technique and help it have a more experimental element perhaps ?

Mega Crit feedback

Aspects that worked well:
  • Mono prints- Love the dark textures and the characters.
  • 'Brilliant concept driven work, vibe suites that subject.
  • ' More graphic and shape would be nice to see.
  • Tone of voice.
  • Print textures are great- combine with drawings?
  • Dramatic and dynamic.
  • Initials already look like finals.
  • Very ambiguous but can see links. - Sophisticated.
  • Realistic feel.
Improvement points.
  • There were no improvement comments on the concept as such. This could be because I have not done enough idea generation or that the concept so far is fine and I just need keep pulling ideas out and making final images.
  • However one good comment that I am going to try was the box could just be an illustration on its own. Why add any extra information to it? what will this add or will it just confuse things?
  • I think from here I need to go back to print room do some more mono prints based on the roughs I have done so far and see if anything new comes out from it and then rough again , keep generating ideas.
  • I also need to clarify I am trying to illustrate, I feel like this aspect of the project is getting forgotten about , I need to re write my project proposal.

Young offenders (Juvenile offenders.)

Young people are offenders under the age of 18, or in some cases aged 18 but remaining in the under 18 estate, and will be held in either a Secure Children’s Home (SCH), a Secure Training Centre (STC) or a Young Offender Institution (YOI). The Youth Justice Board is responsible for placing young people in custody and typically those aged under 15 will be held in an SCH and those over 15 will be held in either a YOI or STC. Only 17 year old female young people are normally placed in a YOI. - Taken from justice gov.co.uk https://www.justice.gov.uk/offenders/types-of-offender/juveniles.

After the age of 18 young people if arrested and charged would be put into main prison along with adult offenders.
There is a phrase used for young offenders moving from YOI to main stream prison. 'Starred up.'  This film (trailer below) is named after the phrase , it is about a 19 year old adult who has made the change from YOI to main stream prison. It is a really intense film and dose demonstrate some very extreme circumstances and issues for example knife crime, physical violence, police brutality and mental health ,  that have been covered by media and news but the film was based on first hand account as the writer who features in the film as a therapist / teacher. There main aim through the film was not to glamourise it , explore authenticity and shooting the film with the right intentions. Filmed within an actual prison and you follow the character Eric Love (19yrs old) though his beginning of his time in prison and being reunited back into the intense relationship with his dad being in the same prison. It did raise a difficult question in my head , I feel like being within an adult prison at that age is still too young, I think at that age there is still a vulrablility and influences from social and environment can have strong effect. However they have committed an offence and therefore by law have to serve a sentence. Also by law the offender is an adult and so it makes sense for them to be placed in main stream adult prison , but this still dose not address the issue how venerable they feel and the extremes that they go to in order to survive, because at 19 you are the youngest individual in that prison. I might reach more just to get a clear idea of how young adults are treated in prison and weather there are segregation system in place within the prisons?

Lousie Lockhart.

- Screen short from website.
- She produces a wide range of products and it is clear that she has a passion for putting her illustrations into different surfaces.

- Lousie Lockhart is a really good example of how disaplins cross, for example in the lecture theater we where sat with  , textiles and illustration and the vast majority of her work related to both subject areas.
- Her process involves using cut paper to draw and compose with before digitally editing it and using method like lithography and resograph to print the final image.
- Scale as well alters depending on the context of the design.
really love the playful and free feeling nature of her work , and it is a feature that i think that my practise is lacking.

- Her used of very simple shape , handwritten type and colour help clear communication but also still translate the hand of the maker.
-Pattern and repetition is also incorporated into the designs which i really like as this makes the image more aesthetically pleasing and allows the different elements to work cohesively together.

- She tends to approach all of the products in the same way but she said that when it comes to selecting colours she thinks about them as if she was going to screen print them. So no more that 3 colours. It makes it a bit simpler and cheaper but at the same time giving the work another dynamic.
- It is good to see a practising print artist being able to make a vast amount of products from textiles to ceramics and is a good example of how print and print aesthetics are still wanted.

Owen Jones- Why 'chavs' were the riots' scapegoat.

This was an article written by Owen Jones about the London Riots of 2012. He highlights at the start of his article stating that the riots are a prime example of the demonisation of the working class. The selected part of text above demonstrates some of the generation that occurred towards the class. Jones also states that the riots repairs will cost a lot of tax payers money as such MPs are baying for the rioters blood however when MPs where found 'systematically milking the expenses system. Only three ended up behind bars.'And when MP Gerald Kaufman claimed £8.750 of tax payers money , he was just asked to pay it back. This defiantly shows that the justice system is 'blind to wealth and power.' Most of the rioters where also male , nine out of ten of individuals arrested where men. Jones puts this down to the de-industrilisation of and as a result the disappearance of skilled jobs.

In an interview with Newsnight Jones was in a debate against David Starkey (historian) :
Key points form the debate:
  • Enoc Powell - ' The rise of blood.'
  • He claims and blames black culture.
  • Dreda say Mitchell then pointed out that he was making it a very ' them' and 'us' situation. She calls for an end to blame culture.
  • it is also pointed out the Starkey is essentially saying that ' white culture has adopted black culture.'
  • Jones then argues back that Starkey from that is saying white people are solely seen as 'respectable.' Which is quite correctly rubbish and that the comments that Starkey is making appalling.
  • Starkey also made a link between rap and rioting on the street, ' Glorifies' it.
  • But the Mitchell argues that rap videos actually highlight that rap videos are' Materialist videos' and show the negative sides of consumerism to bring about change.
  •   Modern gang culture.
  • ' 1 in 2 kids in Tottenham grow up in poverty. Harassment by police.
  • 'Endless consumerism.'
  • Materialism.
  • ' we let the banks off.'
  • Showing Starkey's comments ' dropping black and white culture interchangeably as good and bad.'
  • 'Black culture links to gang culture.' - Starkey.
  • Jones conter argument - 1 in 5 young people cannot get a job as such have no job, needs addressing otherwise riots are going to keep happening again.

Final Posters.

Social Media and Bus Banners. Also plan changes.

Based on the #onpointe that Beth came up with I  made a bus display , board and social media banner to go with it.
Also change of plan given that it is so close to the deadline we have decided that it is probably  best to leave the designs as digital designs. Even though I thought screen printing would look better we haven't got time to print them, and digital printing them would fit better with the whole aesthetic. Also we have decided to scrap the bus handle bar idea as again we are short on time so decided to leave it with just the bus having the # on , but the patterns could still feature as side posters for the main images.

YCN- Royal Ballet submission.

Submitted to YCN.

My reasoning behind deciding to do this brief was that I wanted to tackle a problem that is out of my comfort zone and would require me to have a different approach with my work. I was initially very daunted by the idea of collaboration and creating a campaign.  But I found as the process went on that this was just a confidence issues and eve thing went really well. I thought by doing a ballet brief that this would help me be a more versatile  illustrator. However I admit that when first approaching this brief I fell into the stereotypes of the ballet that the royal ballet want the extinguish. So after undergoing research into the different ways in which ballet is used and gaining an understanding into how much of a physical endurance it was I was able to ditch those stereotypes and try and figure out what I was illustrating. I also really wanted to work with a graphic designer as type and compassion are big weaknesses for me and I wanted to work with someone who was confident with this. From having a group of just two people I think made the whole process much easier and a lot less stressful. communication and organising meeting was easy compared if we had been part of a bigger group , and it was much easier to take each others ideas into consideration and discuss them to make sure that we have equal input into the collaboration. Dividing tasks up as well was much simpler and even thought the work load was probably more than if we had been in a larger group we where still able to set out what we wanted to achieve.

I have found the process really beneficial and can see how collaboration can be used as a tool for enhancing each others independent practises whilst also creating good work. I would defiantly consider collaboration in the future as I find it a really effective way of working , especially on big campaign briefs and you get the share skills with others and like wise they can help you with skills  that you as an individual practitioner may lack in.

Pattern design for the Bar.

I thought instead of coming up with a whole new design for the patterned bar I decided to go back and pick up my screen prints and play around with them on photoshop to see what I could come up with.
I ended up with flipping the screen print that worked the best and overplayed them with each other to come up with the image below. Not enteral sure how I am going to make it fit around the bar , so will need some adjusting but hopefully it should be okay.

I really like the colour pallet of this one. Overlaying the colours seems to have made them bolder and I think it adds a darker more dramatic side to it. Also the shape of the leg links in with that of the Lino cut. I also think it is better in simple shapes as it add a bit more verity to the selection of outcomes we produce as a group.
However I think the red may need lightening more seem to almost go into black and for this to be more appealing I think it needs to be lighter.

Rough digital ideas for posters -YCN-

Not very sure on the colours of some of these , I don't feel like they are quite hitting the mark, but I quite like the double vision style that I have played with because it links in well with a modern and more digital platforms. Was given quick feedback from Beth and she agrees that the colours need some changes and the composition of some too, but will discuss further tomorrow in our meeting. Hoping to at least print I poster tomorrow. The screens are rented out and I just need to go in first thing tomorrow and put emulsion on and then they are ready for the designs. But overall really happy with how the type and image are working togther.

Lino cut Ballet leg and type.

I decided that an appropriate motif for the posters would be the Ballet leg on pointe to link in with the #. But I wanted it to have a point of difference and to make it more modern. So I decied look back at the Sergei Polunin video and studied how his leg muscles work or where poisoned when he was holding positions. I aim for this to communicate the endurance and physical strength that is need for the ballet while still keeping in with the brief specification of communicating the elegance of it.

So the image is still identifiable as ballet but has that extra element of intricate pattern. It also I think has a sense of tradition about it. It links well with the Royal Opera House logo which is of the same colour scheme and style.

It didn't take me very long to cut the leg out and get it printed it only took me an afternoon, which was really great and I think my skills in Lino cutting are improving. Also whilst I was cutting the leg out Beth was creating the type and I have a really good feeling that when these two elements are combined we will have something that links to ballet but in a modern more refreshing way.

Sergei Polunin Ballet - Take me to church.

This is a perfect example of what we are trying to say about the ballet ! Sergei Polunin a lead male dancer left his positon in the royal ballet of principle dancer. In an interveiw with the BBC he says why he left the royal ballet. The main reason was the he question why he was pushing himself so hard , what was his aim ? he found he didn't have one.

He started dancing from the age of 3 , wasn't really his choice it was his mothers. His days where hard 6 hours of physical work per day. 10 yrs old he moved away from his home to london to perform.

Before leaving found himself wanting to do more , experiance other things. However there was a lack of employment opertunitys for him due to drug alligations stated by the media.
He had been under tremendous pressure due to his career and the medias involvment with it.

But now he has aims to change the inferstructure of ballet in oder to get rid of misconceptions and interpritations. Also for the benifit of the other dancer to make sure they are and know how to look after themselves well.
With this vidieo he dose this. He make ballet really appealing to a younger audiance and takes away the tradtional sterotype and gives ballet a fresh perspetive. What I find interesting in this video is that you can see the strain his body is having to go through to peform the dance and how is body and muscles move especially when holding the positons and extending / expressing the movements.
I would really like to incorporate this into my image/s for the posters. Come up with a motfi pehaps that could show an element of endurance?

I have also produced these really quick roughs based on the movements that I saw in the video, but I would ideally like to something more detailed for the actual final image/s.

Secret 7 - Jack Garratt Worry.

Very quick brief that I completed within a day.
It took a lot of organization and I wanted to challenge myself and complete it in a day, which I did. This dose give me confidence to be able to complete briefs quickly and still using the same processes that I would use for longer projects. Because of the speedy nature of this brief I didn’t have much time to think of a detailed concept. I decide to go back to an illustration Friday ‘rock’ and take inspiration from that. This was when I came up with the idea of drawing thing huge circle with a very small person in the left hand half. I wanted it to look slightly brain like and this is why I decide to divide it by colour. But also because worry is physiological, a thought or feeling and I though it made sense to depict it this way but not in an obvious way.
Having the small simple person inside the massive complex circle is a big metaphorical element. The scale is meant to give the sense that the person is lost and alone. Curled up as well suggests isolation and hurt. Lino and screen printing again where good choices and made the process much more enjoyable. I have used bright and vibrant colours because when I
in reference to the lights used,  there was a lovely turquoise/
blue circle behind him on the stage and I really like the
aesthetic of that so I incorporated that into the design too.
I wish I had spent more time on this brief but sadly secret 7
where not taking submissions this year. But if the submission
had been open I would have spent a lot more time on it and
take more time to think over the concept. However it was still a good exercise to do.

Final thing :

Cases Study- New York Times.

They have 3 words that they really drill in on there website , Read , Watch , Engage.  These are the aims that they want the readers and viewers of their magazine be able to do. In order to do this they spread the times across several platforms  , for example print , digital - accessible on tablet, phone, product and video.
They also hold live events and conferences with different collaborators and cover stories that have a wide range of subjects such as , political , social, cultural and creative.
The reason  I chose to look into the New York time specifically is that they have a good emphasis  illustration. They have run a scheme for 2015 and 2016 where they have place some of the best illustration of the year online. These illustrations are not just static images , they also include stings, and gifs that would go along side a digital article to help capture the reader and communicate what the article is about. It is also a really good resource for spotting trends.

Narrative seems to be a effective trend at the moment. Creating sequential illustrations that tells a story , and it can be a very simple narrative but is really effective. An example , this image by Marion Fayolle for an article about infidelity. It tries to tackle the topic and suggests that cheating on your partner may have its links to it , especially within men.  Fayolle narrative I think dose have a light hearted side as it is a humours element when the women's head comes away from her body and kisses the man behind her. The unrealistic approach dose help prevent any offence that people may take to it but is still illustrating the key point.

This was a Gif by Angie Wang -
The article handles a very sensitive and dark subject of when the Taliban bomb exploded near a children park. 72 people died. You realise the sensitivity of the imagery as you read on because the title initially doesn't give much away. The image defiantly has a sadness to it has been approached by unidentifiable figures invisible apart from the shadows , ghosts. And creating the image in black and white allows for no misinterptiation over colour as the wrong colour could send out the wrong message. The simplicity of it as well helps with the same purpose.

This final image I think shows how illustrations can be laid out but also the vast subjects they cover for example the future of capitalism. Again has narrative elements but not keen on this illustration , gets a bit boring , bit to repetitive.

Group tutorial feedback form.

Comment on what is working well about the project idea and research ?

  • Visual metaphors and roughs needed.
  • Screen prints working well - architectural good to develop into more imagery.

Comments on the quality and quantity of sketches/development work done so far.
  • Lovely playful screen prints and monoprints,  Starting point and elements could be used further in work.
  • Traibal Masks - Cultures to be compared.
Give constructive feedback on ways this project could be strengthened and developed.
  • Find the articals your'e going to create, work for ...
  •  Grayson Perry
  • Benefit street
  • Look at documentaries how could you apply editorial context to this?
  • Look at social classes in different cultures and draw comparisons.
  • Look at the royal academy website for reference.
  • Rewrite proposal for more focus.
  • Look at Peter Howson and Sue Coe- animal rights artist.
So my path has changed again and i'm going to be moving to editorial . Taking the editorial approach makes my life much easier.  I can really visualise the topic i'm approach within an editorial context and it makes much more sense for it to be there. This mean I am rewriting my project proposal to fit into this context. It open up my options for what I can make and I can be more opinionated as i have a lot of opinons on this topic.  The session was really helpful because I have been quite lost for a few days now trying to work out how I am going to get around this. Find articles and illustrating them , them from there making gifs for a digital platfrom. This will give the project much more structure and something to aim for , I think this has been the problem I didn't know what I am aiming for. But now I have an aim I can get on with it.

BBC News- What class are you? 2013

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22000973

  • Emergent service class. - I took the test myself and this was the result I got . It states that the people in this group are young, enjoy a cultured social life , rent their houses - almost 90%. Which dose make sense but looking at the responses of others who took the test it is obvious that society as a whole could have said that there are embedded prejudices towards social class.

  • Elite:
  • 'I'm a member of the elite. the country's properly gubbed of that's the case. I can't even spell cavyar.'

  • Established middle:
  • ' I'm uneasy about taking this class calculator. If i'm middle class, i'll fill a 4x4 with organic pesto and drown myself.'
  • Technical middle:
  • ' I'm technical middle class, which means I shop at wait rose but then feel guilty. '

  • New affluent workers:
  • 'Not sure how to make tiny pension cover cost of latest heating oil bill, but am new affluent worker . ' apparently'.

  • Traditional working class :
  • 'Despite being public school and oxford, I scored as traditional working class. Dimond Geezer too ?'

  • Emergent service workers :
  • 'It's time to get some new friends, not just postal workers and farmers.'

  • Precariat:
  • ' came out as precariat , despite going to the theatre. Let nobody tell you culture is elitist.'

  • 'Classes are bundles of economic, cultural and social capital that convey advantage for individuals and families from one generation to the next.'
  • French sociologist , pierre bour dieu first developed this approach in 1984. Suggested that there are different types of capitals which give people an advantage in life.
  •  ECONOMIC, CULTURAL AND SOCIAL.
  • There aim -' We wanted to find a detailed ways of measuring how much economic cultural and social capital people possess.'
  • 161,458 people look part in the survey. 90% of participants described themselves as 'white'.'

Examples of posters- royal ballet.

Quick experiments with screen printing using stencils. The quality of these prints is not that great as printing with stencils, causes the colours to rise and print unevenly , but when I have got a final design together I will be screen printing properly and the quality will be vastly better.
Playing around with shapes and colour, was my main aim when creating these images. I deiced to keep the imagery simple as to allow for the text to be added. Too complicated and image and the text will be lost. However the colours really need to be brighter , luminous and this was brought up in the crit. They do also need to communicate more about ballet, the narrative side rather than the movement. I need to work on this more. I also think working from a narrtive will help more with the image making.

Tried different layouts , but a plainer background with pattern over the top seems to work best, as the text can be overlayed in one colour e.g. white. If there are too many patterns it would be hard to select a colour in which the text can sit.

So from here :

  • More of a narrative element.
  • brighter colours.
  • Keep it shape based and slightly abstract.

This is England- film 2006

This is England originally started as a film and them was made into a TV series on channel 4. It is based around a working class community and a young lad who has just moved into the area , getting bullied at school for his clothing and gets mixed into a group of 'Skin heads' who are much older than him and they tech him how they dress and there way within society. Then another group of 'skinheads' join and there views are extreme for example about race , war and the reasons behind why they think that they are overlooked within society.

It is really interesting to see how these different views and influences have on this young lad. He goes from being reasonable person to getting roped into gang crime and racial attacks. It is an interesting demonstration of how social culture influences young people like it was shown in the documentary  Street Style and Sound, that teenagers and young people where tagreted by this.  From watching this film I kept drawing similarities between the 80's youth culture and now. We still have gangs and groups of teens who dress the same and act the same. I need to do more research int this but there are some strong similarities between now and the youth of the 80's. Also could this be where the diminution of the working class emerged from.

Yann Kebbi

Yann Kebbi is a very versatile within the materials he uses. For example coloured pencil , etching and monotype. But it's particularly Kebbi's monotype prints that interest me. There feels to be real raw emotion behind these pieces and way the artist style lends itself to the process, gives a very paintley technique. It is very gestural and figurative, the colours too help to explain the artist opinion almost and the emotion they want to portray.

I feel like this image could be one of fear. The body is bent down and the head is through a hole in the floor and is within a single colour, which dose suggest hidden, confined.  Above the colours are mixed and this gives the impression that it is more open space.
Like how Kebbi doesn't used traditional colours that are associated with things like the body and dark confined spaces, but is still able to communicate there intentions. Particularly with the enclosed space the yellow dose communicate dark and that particular yellow is unpleasant so it plays on peoples emotions.

It seems already like an emotional image. The line quality almost looks like scratch marks and uneven so could have a less pleasing aesthetic but this really helps to get the emotion across. It's is rugged , gritty and raw.

Group Crit - Collaboration- The Royal Ballet.

Questions:

Do the abstract patterns work? Bold shapes , brighter colours?

  • It's good that is it abstracts. Works better for a more figurative approach. Bolder and brighter colours are a really good idea.
  • But DANGER- It doesn't want to become too gig poster like as this will give off the wrong impressions of what the ballet is like, not a true reflection. It could almost be miss selling the product.
  • Euro 2012- Football presented as an art form.
  • Think way beyond what they are asking you for - example - try and get free tickets from Royal opera house. Be experianal and ask. But also be carful that you stick to just mainly focusing on the royal opera house not the institutions like Northern Ballet.
  • Getting under the skin of people - why do films like la la land and black swan become so popular and yet theatres do not get attend by the same audience.
  • Include the narrative of ballet , the drama and narratives could be included in the imagery? Relate more closely to die hard.
  • Watch red shoes.
  • challenge them - ask why ?
  • The poster should echo the message , the trailer for example should enforce it.
  • Look at other sources that maybe don't relate to the brief for example the 1975's performance at the brits. It was initially thought to be highjacked but works text appeared during the performance. But this was a request by the band and they are critical comments from people on social media and they have turned the comments on there head and made them part of there piece.

George Butler.

George Butler is a reportage artist who vists different countries and citys,  which are war torn or streets in daily life.  He has illustrated covers and articals for G2 magazine and the times. Afghanistan seems to be one of his biggest projects. He traveld there initially with the british army but found he was confided to drawing them and  place where they where and so he went back and drew the people of Afghanistan. The media only show people what they want them to see , they never show the full picture. So the only impressions we have of the country and the people of Afghanistan is that what the news tell us. Wiplace like Afghanistan being shown of the news a violent, dangerous country and so your initial reactions is don't go there , but Butler did and what I think more illustrators need to do and actually go there or tackle difficult issues and show the hidden sides. We shouldn't solely relay on what the news tell us, and this is a really good definition of what I mean when I said in my project proposal that it is part of an illustrators responsibility. Make more sense of issues and people, translating the reality or a description of the reality for people to see and take in. Making the issue visual, accessible and understandable.

This image of an amputee staring at Butler when he was drawing I find a really striking image. I like how from one image/ portrait you can gain a lot of information for example, he has lost both limbs on his left side and you question how did that occur? You get a slight idea of his character and you sympathies with him as his life cannot be easy with missing two major limbs. But there is an element of hope as he is sitting up, and alive.

I would really love to approach my project in this way, go out do some drawings of people and the places they live  as i think that there is a really value to this approach as you gain a stronger understanding of real society. And with my brief being so people orientated I think that this would be a good move. I can then work from these sketches and come up with more elaborate ideas later on.

Final To Kill a Mockingbird cover.

I wish I started the cover much earlier !! I had a very good understanding of the context of the book and issues that surround it but I don't think that I have take full advantage of this. However in the time I had to make the cover I was able to add some context to the image, although it is not obvious.  During the Civil right movement the protestors would have these placards around the necks in support of the movement. I remember seeing this when reasurching for 504 as it shocked me that the had to put signs round there neck stating the obvious so the people with in a  integrated racial hatred society would see.
I really like the stuctrure of the type in this image so I carried the idea across on to my own type.
The strength of communication within this image using just words is really interesting and this was the idea I took across. Playing around with scales , size , colour and structure. Having the first two letters of the main words and integral part of the cover helps with coming away from the classical images of Mockingbird and approaching it from a different perspective. I could have made a stronger concept of the colours. Having them mixing together shows a spectrum of colour and this could have worked and linkedin with race and how we are all alike. But the colours I have used are all primary colours. This was an link to child hood and a reference to the children the book revolves around by again i'm not sure how clear this is.

Having the smaller elements of detail still helps i think to give the books its gracefulness, because the way harper lee tells the story us graceful and respectful. But it can be said that the vines/ branches are dipping into the stereotypical imagery.

Developing final design for Coldblood

Done my final cover and overall I am happy with it. Taking the type based approach to the image met the brief but was a challenge. When I have done type base images before I haven't been successful and so was anxious when it came to cutting and making my own type. But I found that cutting out the letters large scale allowed me when editing to shrink rather then enlarge so it kept it form and didn't pixelate. I can also reuse this type face in other briefs as I still have the linos and prints. The type as a whole works which I am surprised at. From working on the cover before. when I put the text together it didn't work that well, the title and smaller captions looked like different type faces. But it seems more consistant and neater in this cover.
Using just type and colour has also worked well , even though it is more graphic design based there is still and illustrative element to it, the overlapping of the letters and the colour. Using the letters as background shapes and forming the words around them helped me make a fairly successful composition. They way cold and blood have been positioned could be better however I still like it how it is. I wanted the Journalistic element to come across strongly in this cover as it is referred to in the blurb as a work of journalism. And it is , through out the whole book Capote acts almost like reporter and gives the different account of the story from each persons perspective.
I didn't want to illustrate the death scene as I think the book itself dose a really good job of it and it was one thing that shocked me whilst reading and I think illustrating it on the cover could take away from the impact that the description has.

Screen printing the final image was a good idea. I gives the image a really lovely visual quality and emphasizes the hand made and mass print concept of an object like a newspaper concept. Love the colours and printing them helped the to blend better and also made them slightly brighter. Happy with the submission and I think I have overcome a problem in my practise which was avoiding type so really pleased that I have made a piece of work that is just type based and looks good.

Artist 1- Sister Corita Kent

Sister Corita Kent mainly worked with screen printing with a two dimensional perspective. Kent chose print a her main method of image making because of her aim for democratic outreach. Her main themes of her images are social , political and religious issues. She was an art activist and and her work had a mainly included type based imagery, with collage mixed in. Her prints also often featured consumer brands along side spiritual texts. This is an interesting juxtaposition between consumerism and religious beliefs. A really good example of her work showing social issues is a piece called ' love your brother' which has an image of Martin Luther King , a quote from him overlayer with a religious teaching. This clearly gives out the message of race equality but also the wider message of equality throughout all aspects of society.

Sister Corita Kent could be said to be one of the drivers behind pop art culture , take inspiration for arts such as Warhol. And she had a really fascination with the wider message and way in which she could communicate these messages.

I think that she is a real inspiration because I really like how she isn't your stereotypical print artist. She deletes that misconception and use print to spread positive messages is an appealing, contemporary and beautiful way. It is also really good to see another print maker and there approach to tackling social and political issues. Her use of colour is also very brave and something in which I need to be come braver in. luminous colours , pinks , oranges e.c.t

Touching elbows - Kate Gibb and Will Luz

I really love how highly experimental all of there work is. It is full of pattern , shape colour and texture and you really get an idea of process, play and that they enjoyed making the piece. This is something that I would really love to achieve during this module. I want to be more experimental , playful. Going to screen print and just printing with stencils instead of coming up with an elaborate Lino cuts. They could come after but I think my best way of getting this project off the ground is doing unplanned experimentation. From this I can then narrow it down more and nit pick the best bits and create image from this and mix that with Lino cuts.
Here are some examples of the fabrics that Touching elbows have created and you can still see the experimentation that has gone into them and how that has worked.

Really strong bold colours that are mixed with different variations of line and tone. The same shapes are used in the different designs the elements that have changes are the composition and colours. But this really helps to emphasis the fact that they are a series. Overlaying and having a lack of fear when approaching this seemed key. And keep re making the design until it is right helps to make sure that you are happy with it. Because I have found that from doing previous briefs that if you sink your teeth and really enjoy a briefs and are happy with the work then that helps to make the work stronger and your passion for it and the subject your tackling expands.
These are screen printed and have been placed onto furniture and are sold and just fabrics and I think it is a good example of how fabric pattern design can be sold in a wide variety of ways.
