After Effect Session 4.

Positon path.(above)

Select this option in order to work and transform layer properties.

Auto orientation button at bottom of selection menu allows you to create an orientation path within which you can make paths for the objects to move along.

But when you are setting up a motion path make sure you are focusing on the correct layer with the key frames. This ensures that you have achieve consistency between key frames.

key point- spacing between the key frames determines the speed.

 Example of motion path above.

Different switches to use:
The shy switch:

Allows to to simplify your layer pallet, meaning that when clicked on the layer will be hidden so you can not work on it.

Film Frame:

3rd Print

I made this third print simpler because all of the other prints that I have done so far have been quite complicated and detailed so doing a simpler one is better as it will hopefully help to balance the set out, let the viewer have a breather almost. It also gave me the opportunity to design a new head. Again I want this to be a symbol the represented the growth of  black rights movements and for it to almost to represent life and a respect for it , with the lungs, branches growing from the lungs and the small shoots surrounding the head. I cut this on a slightly smaller lino compared to the last one just to save time. However I have been feeling that I am starting to run out of new ideas and I see myself struggling to get new ideas down and printed. I need to find a way round this.

Final second print.

It was a long process screen printing this image. I really anted to cut an A3 lino, Mainly because I had more room for detail and image but also I wanted to push myself to see if I could create an image big enough to exists within the large frame. And I managed it and I now really want to go bigger in the future , A1 maybe? Then when it came to screen printing this the first time, due to working at a large scale , I had to shrink the image down on photoshop and it was only when I started printing I realised the image was blurred. this cause the print to look a mess e.g. image on the left.  so started again , and second time much better.

Cutting the A3 lino was really time consuming but it turned out okay. However I still have another 3 prints to do , I really need to speed up!
The context behind this image is the panther is surrounded by a pattern inspired by finger prints(identity)  and this is surrounded by tabacco leaves which where farmed by people in slavery in the 1800's and today. I wanted it to be a power symbol or a symbol of powerful identity, not sure weather this comes across, but feed back from the crit will give me a better idea. But I feel that I could have done a better job of illustrating it and spent more time working out what I wanted to say in a more concise way. But I am happy that I used colour in a more obvious way compared to the last print , I adds depth and makes the image look more appealing, rather then just black and white.

In my next print I really want to try and move away from the panther as the main point of focus and  on other aspects, otherwise I can see the prints getting very repetitive and it would make for a more interesting set if they where some variation within it. Overall with this current print I am happy to leave it there but I just wish that I had spent more time on development.

Storyboard task and workshop.

In the workshop I had realised that I have really over complicated my 5 initial ideas. I was trying to create Lord of the rings and I think because I was trying to tackel a huge issue at once. I would be better if I just selected three objects.
However when drawing up the story boards I found that I was thinking more about camera angles and zooming in and out. But Composition is really lacking and it is a key element so i really need to nail this in later roughs.

I need to simplify it down too, as I am doing lino for most of my prints , it is detailed and this would be  pain to animate, so simplifying it down to simple shapes is the way to go.

The workshop was really helpful and , it helped me to use my imagination more and think more outside the box.

plummet and splat.

I normally have a real nightmare roughing but I actually really enjoyed making up stupid and funny narratives to fit with the key shape ( a circle) and the words, like float above.
I think this approach of selecting a certain shape and a word to work with would be a good idea because it may help me to stop over complicating things. KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!
I also need to bear in mind about camera angles for example , pan, zoom, track and panning.
Dynamic composition too, small details and little devices. I want to revisit my project proposal too, because I need to simplify that too , will help. I just need to power down idea and get them to a good stage for the mega crit.

Project proposal - Moving image.

Sting using sounds.- BBC 2.

This compared to the other short animation sequences I have looked at is much more simple, It also used much simpler sounds too. For example the chosen music has a aquatic sound to it , but this just seem to run over the top of the animation. It is overlayed by sounds like the two coming up through the water ,  the mechanical movements of it turning. It has a very short and simple narrative, two come up , looks right , left and then goes back down. For the 10 second sting that we could create this would be a great example of how simple it could be. But I would prefer to take a more interesting narrative then a bit of movement by a couple of objects. I think one piece music can be used more effectively when it fits the mood and movement of the objects rather then adding sound effects over the top. I prefer that method, it would make for a slicker and consistent outcome.  It would also tie the whole sting together.

After effects/ animation that use music- Ratatouille- pixar, disney

Music is a really strong factor in this sequence as,  most all of the rats movements are based around it for example, the foot steps at the beginning, and the rat get his tale caught in the trap, just so when it hits the music breaks. The pace also reflects the movement of a rat, fast quick and light. It has been prissily timed so it fits with the musics rhythm and pace. This must have been hard as because it is a piece of classical music the pace and rhythm change frequently.  So this would mean adapting and changing the movements often. However I think that this makes for a more interesting animation , as it allows the veiwer these reprieve and then throws another load of information at them, rather then just a consistent fast beat with an overload of information.  the music also replicates the sound of some of the objects for example the alarm clock is a shrill flute. So small details in the music can bring a connection between the objects and the music.

After effects/ animation with music- Monster university- pixar.

Like the other monsters Inc title sequence this one runs along very similar lines in which it works with the music.  Apart from this one is appears to be going at a fast pace which means that the objects like the books and papers are moving faster. They type moves with the drum beats and relates also the the mood of the character. In fact I think that the music reflects the mood and enthusiasm of the main character and sets the initial story up well.  It is much shorter then the other titles too. But I think the amount of content could still be the same. I could be that just because the music is so fast pace it allows for objects to move quicker there for enabling the animator to cover more content ?
The type of music appears very military, so this allows for the animator to play around with the formation of the objects too, for example the cards flowing out in a neat ordered pattern , but the this is juxtaposed by the messy movements of the main character.  The music is very sequential to the animation and is a fundamental part of the story telling as it dose reflect the characters emotions or the situation they are in.

Playing around with new ideas.

Trying to think of a new idea for a print but struggling as I was playing around more with the hand idea on Photoshop and I came up with this design in which I have adjusted the layers, so the image of the small panther underlayed the hand print. I was aiming for the meaning behind this to be a symbol that was pro the movement. But I don't think it works as it isn't very clear and the Panther doesn't really aline with the hand.

I tried it in different colour as well, the orange in reference to the jail system in america. Orange is a relivent colour to the subject, so I am thinking of keeping most of the prints black , orange and white.

I really need to work out the rest of the prints , but I really want to try doing a A3 sized lino , as I think it is achievable in the time left and I think it would really help push my print practise forward. Not so sure about this hand idea though.

Illustration Friday - Spider.

First illustration Friday. feeling a lot of pressure when going into this but I set myself a dead line for it and as I got closer to the deadline I felt less pressured and less worried about how the image would look and this helped me to make effective decisions. I defiantly lack confidence in putting my work out there but after posting this on the website, it showed me that the whole process was easier then I thought, this has given me more confidence.

Printing the lino then going on to Photoshop and editing it slightly with textures was a good idea I think. It emphasises the hand made feel and gives the image better tonal values.

I am fairly happy with the image, but given that I gave my self quick turn around for this breif, 2 days. I have surprised my self as to what I am able to achieve in this time. However I think I could have given the image more meaning or a
stronger concept behind it.

 Initial Texture experiments:

  • Overall I struggled to place the spider on this texture so all of the detail could be seen clearly. Having the image on a plain white background shows the lino itself well but through experimenting in Photoshop , I found that but making the texture white and over laying it on the lino gave me a good texture as well but much more subtle.

first print screen

I am really hoping that when it come to a crit that the sympathetic note in the image comes across. I have printed the Pather with a man draped over the top of it. The Pather protecting the human. And plants are growing behind them is a nodd to the slave past where they where farming cotten but also a reference to growing , the growing movement towards equal rights.A more positive angle to focus on.  I have also added the orange to some of the plants a reference to the jail system in america. But I think I can make this better and make the second colour more obvious by adding it into the striped mark on the animal. If I have time I will re vist this image and try to amend it but at the moment I am happy to leave it as it is. I really need to get cracking on the rest of the prints and potentially a book as well, but prints first.

After Effects artist -3 - Monsters Inc- pixar and disney.

  • This vidio is a great example with how the animation works with the music rather then just plays over the top. The appearing,  opening and closing of the doors and the way the monsters move looks to have been dictated by the music, almost a dance. This approach I think really fits well with the young audience that the film is aimed at.
  • There is a lot going on the screen and it is colourful. This again I think is a consideration for the audience but also reflects the mood of the film being funny and odd.
  • It is a good example of simple shapes being and just animating with though in a fun way.
  • the hand drawn elements really work with the digital shapes as they have been overlayed on each other, but having the more detailed monsters creates a great contrast to the plain background and half and half doors.
  • The different elements also flow together in a fun and creative way, for example when the letters try to eat the monsters and the monsters come out of the doors. It also employs the main concept of the film. monster hiding in your bed room cupboard.
  • It is a strong opening sequences that sets the film up well.

After effects artist 2- A Monster calls- Jim Kay and Candlewick press.

  • I have read the book in which the animation is advertising and it is probably one is the sades books I have read in a while. So because of that the music fits really well with the video.
  • I love the transition you see between Jim Kay's illustrations into the animation. I think that because his drawings are so striking especially the monster you get a better sense of the character in the video.
  •  Again like in a series of unfortunate events , the textures that have been created by the original drawings/prints helps give a hand made atheistic to the animation , whilst also enhancing the dark and ominous atmosphere.
  • Having the shape of the boy, no face, makes reference to the book, in which the character feels unseen but also takes into consideration the readers imagination of the character. I think it makes it more personal.
  • The animation also has a ripped page texture that runs throughout and that acts as a frame for the film and this is a good consideration to have in mind. Will make it better then a plain background.
  • TEXT! Having quotes for sections of the text helps to tell the narrative , but also give veiwer quick information with out having to illustrated it complexly. It is a quick and clear.
  •   Overlaying different elements too, foreground, mid-ground, background.
  • The video also sticks to a certain colour pallet of blues , blacks and whites.
  • This animation fits its purpose really well and makes the book very appealing, and give just enough information about the story to make it so. it is a hard balance to strike.

After effects artist 1- A series of unfortunate events - Jamie Caliri.

  •  The films elements all seem to flow into each other and connect to the next moment seamlessly, for example at the beginning you have the eye , then from the outside is the shadow of Count Olaf , which comes out to revels the next scene. By having these flowing elements it makes for a stronger narrative with in the video.
  • From having worked with after effects a bit I can see how Carliri has animated some of the elements but, I think the animation appears to be so much more complicated with the detail put onto the initial drawings. he still keeps the shapes simple but the small elements of detial on them and the verity of shapes makes it look complex.
  • I also love how it seems just to follow a certain colour pallet, blacks , dull greys , blues and off whites. It relates well to the films atmosphere and the topics the film addresses.
  • Using black shapes to help the composition of each frame is a great idea and is effective in creating the dark tone and making the key characters stand out.
  • Overlaying some of the shapes with textures too gives a really good aesthetic. almost takes away the digital elements and give it the hand made feel.
  • Having repetition of movements as well is a effective idea, making certain shapes move in the same way throughout the animation I think also give consistency.
  • The roccuring visual symbols, the eye.
  • I can see now how even with completely different visual signatures you can really make the animation your own and still express your opinion through it and I think it is a great way of visually communicating to an audience.

1st print idea

Merging both images together on Photoshop was a good idea, it meant that I could clean the images up a bit before printing. I still need to play around with adding colour and photoshop will be good for this too.

I am not sure about the hands and feet wrapped around the Panther. I think it would be better if I got rid of then and blend the man body into the panther instead. I want it to come across as if Panther is protecting the human, don't know if I am doing this yet?
The plan is to screen print this image just to unify it all and some times I find when you screen print the screen has lines and textures with in it from the amount of times it has been used and I think that add to the images asethic rather then just perfectly digitally printing it.

Overall though I am happy with how it is turning out so far and I just need to play around on photoshop a bit more before printing.

Peer review- Responcive.

Briefs selected:

  • All 3 penguins book covers.
  • Secret 7- Jack Garratt , churvches and the new ones released in January.
  • Batsford Prize.
Is the rational sound:
  • Yes, good selection of briefs that could really lend themselves to experimenting with print and collaboration with graphics and animation.
  • Passion project- The Batsford Prize.
What technical considerations are there?
  • Graphic designer help with text for book cover?
  • Print play for the Batsford prize and secret 7.
What time considerations are there?
  • Planed amount of day in which to rough, make and finalise.
  • And months in which the briefs need to be completed.
Is the balance of briefs appropriate?

yes, all spaced out through the year and different range of things to design/illustrate for.

Jack Garratt.

Jack Garratt was amazing!!! I think by going to see him live has really given me a strong idea of how other people connect to the music, I personally relate to it and himself. I find some of the songs quite empowering however when he played 'worry' there did seem to be an element of sadness and almost loneliness . I think this is because you forget that it is just him on stage , no one else and this I think is an element that make his music special and shows his talent.  He really cares about what he is playing, even though his performance only exists in a small area , that power he puts into the hitting the drums and the expressions when he is singing I think is self reflecting of what he is wanting to communicate about his music. Also he is a very visual performer , in the way he moves when he performs but also the stage lighting. It is very bold and powerful , energetic as well. Bright Neon lights that pann across the audience and that fall in time time to rhythms and beats.

From being in an environment where you are seeing him live you also see the kind of music his audience attracts, young teens and adults, mainly. This dose give me some grounding in which to work off as the cover ideal would want to appeal to this audience too.

Symbols like the circle featured highly in the performance , the light up one on his hat to the one behind him. Really like the idea for that being part of the composition so how?

How to illustrate the people ?

I think that these experiments in mono print because in at least on of my final prints I want to show mass incarceration in some way. I am really struggling with how to create people. This way seems to work well but it is then mixing it with other printing methods and screen printing it possibly. As there are so many tones , half tone could be an option but I could wreck the marks already made. I will need to try this out in photoshop. But I really enjoy this method, However it would be good to find a new way for mono printing with different objects. I need to carry on play around with that and see what comes up. But lino could still be a good option.

The New York Times- China's threat to wild tigers.

  • The purpose of the image is to appear along side an articular about wild tiger threat.
  •  Having the tiger in black and the people in white is a great contrast. Both elements balance each other successfully and this allows for all elements to be seen clearly.
  • The narrative running through the animals body is really good idea and accompany the artical well. The men holding there weapons and all look to be going towards the tigers head.
  • I like how the people in the image are very vague in appearance, not greatly detailed, I think it allows for more detail to be used in the tiger and dons't over complicate the image.
  • Also the shapes used for the trees help elevate the tigers shape. and the mark making on the legs and tail gives the image a tribal feel which I like.
  • Making the Tiger looks so beautiful and the men so plain add emphasis onto the topic of man killing beast and the size of the animal in the image is almost a reflection of it's importance.
  • The image looks to have been made using digital media as that would be a sure way of applying the white in a controlled manor on the block black background

Large scale lino

I decided to do a large scale lino just to see how long it took and weather it would be a possibility for one of the prints. I really think that this technique could work as a final image. having the panther as a re occurring feature could also work. I like the idea of a big panther head but I need something else to add to it. The black panther movement was a strong powerful movement and almost oppressed oppression in a way. so playing around with perspectives and scales could be a good way to show this.

Overall I think I am now moving away from trying to show things from a child perspective and now focusing more on the stereotypes that are surrounding African Americans and mass incarceration of today. I need to develop this image more but I have a strong basis to work off and room for some experimental development too, i am think at the moment of mono printing over the top of the print , could give some really interesting results?

The secret 7.

I had never heard of the secret 7 but since reading up on them I am really interested in the projects they create and the main concept behind them. So 7 tracks are picked by 7 artists. Creatives (us) have to then represent the track in there own visual signature. 700 sleves are selected and exhibited. The sleves can then be bought but the people who buy them have no idea who is it designed or which artist features on the track until them money has been handed over.

Unfortunately the new secret 7 isn't going to be announced until January 2017, but one of the past artist is Jack Garratt who's music I am a big fan of and I am going to his gig next week! Even though I would actually be submitting anything it would just the right brief to practise with. This is a perfect opportunity to have a go at designing the cover. experiencing the music first hand and seeing other peoples reactions will be a great platform for inspiration.  There is also Chvches who's music I equally enjoy so I may do that one too! Below Jack Garratt performing 'Worry' at the Brits.

Two colour lino experiments.

Using the lino tools in the print room, I found I got a much better quality of line and pattern compared to using my own. I think for the future it would be worth investing in some swiss lino cutters, they are really good.
I wanted to do a two colour lino as I have never done one before and when done well can look aesthetically strong.
This print here was in blue when I printed and the image below in black but these prints could work well for positives and negatives for screen printing.

I had problems when printing with the registration marks as I should have stuck the sheet down with tape so it didn't move about, would have helped with accuracy. And i'm not sure about the colour colour choice ether , I will experiment more on photoshop with this and go back and maybe re print if I have time.

However the overall design is interesting , I was aiming for a panther, it dose have aspects of this however I feel it could be a much stronger representation.

When printed onto fabric the colours did faded a bit and the registration marks where way off , however i think it looks really cool still and I am thinking for at least one of the final prints to be a large lino cut and it would be fun to make and I want to be more ambitious in the execution of my final images as I don't think that I have done that so far in any projects.

Feedback from mega crit.

Visually:

  • Very textural, ambitious and creative.
  • Stick with the colours orange and black, strong.
  • Lino cut prints are impressive, so good that I'd suggest to push it all the way.
  • mono or lino would work with your style.
Ideas:
  • Rough and natural textres apply well.
  • Dark tone fits with your surreal otherworldly creature.
  • You could challenge yourself with colour in the brief- use other colours then black, the orange works.
Like:
  • Wolf prints, in lino work really well.
  • using materials is different and innovative.
  •  Lino cuts would look good as screen prints and mono too.
Overall I am happy with the feedback and I think carrying on with lino is definitely an option, I would love to have one of my prints as a detailed lino , it would be loads of fum and aesthetically would work well. And I am keen to push colour more too, and really want experiment with mixing two colours. The wolf one needs more development by I think it could be a potential final image.

Essi kimpimaki

Essi Kimpimaki work has a very playful feel and I really like her use of colour in this particular print. It could easily be made with only two colours as well. really lovely colour pallet used as well , complimentary colours that when overlapped can create similar colours.
I really like how the print tells a narrative. With the elephant wondering through the forest , the person with there crown on their head and the look to be heading towards the house.

The mark making in this image too is so good, I love how different medias seem to have been used to create the patterns and this is evident from the line quality. The simplicity of the elephants, colour makes it stand out as well as the shapes, too makes the image easy to read and also allows for more detail in the background.

I would love to make and image like this and screen print it and I can easily do this by using koda trace and the different medias just need to be thick enough as to not let the light through when exposing it. I am going to go for it when I have a design that will work! and I will also use a wider verity of colour too !!!

Overcomplicating.

I think that after doing all this research I really need to narrow it down. I have loads of ideas off run with but it is picking one in which to follow that I am finding hard. I have an idea based on the perspective that Harper Lee took in to kill a mockingbird which is to show the issue from the perspective of a child. As shown in a image in my previous blog post , 1 in 9 african american children have a parent incarcerated in the american jail system today. Having a child in the images could allow me to make my work have a more softer and sympathetic feel to it? If I follow this I can incorporate other features like the Black Panther movement, How could a symbol like the black panther relate to the child? Another issue is the mass incarceration, this could be shown through repetition and the composition of this pattern. But could focusing on mass incarceration and a child perspective been too much? Am I better just using the child?

In order to solve this problem I need to take a step back from printing, start sketching and think about how this idea could work. And I really need to pin point what I am trying to say.

During the last crit this image was reseved well and I think it is because of how the image resinates with others. It is not a complicated image and playing with scale seems like an effective way of communicating. I just need to go away and draw up some more ideas.

Responsive competition briefs.

Briefs:

  • To Kill A Mocking Bird- Harper Lee.
  • In Cold Blood- Turman Capote.
  • The secret diary of Adrian Mole- Sue Townsend.
  • Jack Garratt (secret 7) 'Worry'
  • Chvrches (secret 7)' Clearest Blue'
  • The Batsford Prize - 'Interpreting Nature.'
  • UK Greetings- YCN.
  • Illustration friday.
  • .....
  • ......
Rationale:

  • To Kill A Mocking Bird- Harper Lee- I am already looks and creating work base on Harper Lee's work in OUIL504. And as a result of that I have work I can bounce off from and I have a strong understanding of the circumstances behind the book. The civil rights movement and the slave trade. Also I find book covers a challenge due to the size restraint so working on all three covers, I will hopefully find a method in which best to fit this particular requirement. Also with the cover being type heavy will also be a challenge, I need to get better with type.
  • In Cold Blood, the themes behind the book I think would fit well with the dark style my work seems to take. And I have never really looked at non fiction books before so it is a chance to approach another type of literature.
  • The secret diary of Adrian Mole- Sue Townsend- I need to challenge myself to work for age ranges that I am not use to. The type of audience that would read Adrian Mole would be young and I really want to try and make work for a younger audience so I am more versatile as an illustrator. As I think that being able to connect with different audiences is a vital skill that I need to get the hang of. Also the book is a comedy which would be good angle to take from a image making point of view.
  • Jack Garratt- Even though this is a past brief I think it would be ideal for me to practise with first before I tackle the actual live ones. Also this will co inside perfectly when I go and see him live next week as it will be perfect primary resurch and should hopefully bring out some ideas.
  • Chvrches- with this and Garratt I have never really though about illustrating for music but after looking a the secret 7 it seems like a very exciting prospect! Chvrches are a very interesting band, in the way the dress and produce music. So coming up with a illustration for 'Clearest Blue' would be really good way again of practising but also maybe trying out new combinations of techniques. I need to start using digital methods more as I tend to work analogue a lot of the time.
  • The Batsford Prize, 'interpreting nature'- This would be a really fun breif to do in print as I could make it really pattern based and experimental.
  • UK greetings-Similar reasons as to the batsford prize but I would be really good expeireance to make work for product rather then book or digital.
  • Illustration Friday- Answering the words they put online will be great practise for responding to briefs quickly. It is also really good practise for just responding to briefs in general, and working on this continually will hopefully give me more confidence in working with live briefs.

  • Practical Skills/Media/Format.
    • Typography is going to be my main concern. As I know from experience if the type is wrong or poorly positioned it can wreck the whole design. To overcome this problem I may need to talk to someone on graphics and hopefully they will be able to advise me on how best to place the type as well as what style to use.
    • Composition- I think especially with the Cover briefs , I will need to put some time aside to really play around with the composition , as it is not a strength for me. And the imagery also needs to fit the given formats well so moving elements round on Photoshop would probably be a good idea.
    • Staying with in the Format for the book covers and making images that can work as digital images on websites.
