5A7:  Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to media, communication, audience and context through the delivery of solutions to brief led problems or clearly identified creative concerns. (Knowledge & Understanding -  Critical Awareness)
At the beginning I did a wide amount of research into my chosen subject area of social class and the stereotypes associated with the different classes for example with the working class, gangs and ‘chavs.’ I read several theories on this subject in order to gain a strong understanding of what I was dealing with. It was a sensitive subject so therefore creatively it did present some problems. Editorial is seen by the masses so my main challenge was creating images that both depicted the issue but in a sensitive yet thought provoking way.
Excellent

5A8: Understand the potential and limitations of technologies and processes used in the production of illustration for 2d, 3d and/or 4d distribution. (Knowledge & Understanding -  Research)
I have analyzed other editorial practitioners work and considered the potential restrictions of working with the intention of your work being put into an editorial context. With editorial, there are quite a lot of limitation such as format, scale and making sure that the image holds relevance to the text and captures the viewer to read the article. Colour can also be a limitation, if you were working for a magazine for example you may get more than two colour but for a broadsheet you may only get one or two colours with which to work with.
Very good.
5B5: Analyse and critically evaluate the impact of social, cultural, technological and/or ethical concerns on the development of solutions to problems relevant to individual creative concerns. Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)
I have undertaken a huge amount of research into the project, which tackled a hard hitting and sensitive issues. The issues I tacked was a social one and I was working within an editorial context, which means that the image would been seen by a wide range audience and so it was important that it did not offend. Which is why the initial research I did was so important. It helped me to gage people’s opinions and views which was really key in helping me develop my own, but also identifying a way which best to approach the issue.
Excellent.

5C6: Explore and apply a range of appropriate practical and conceptual approaches to self-determined ideas, concepts, solutions/proposals in response to own identified intentions and relevant practices. (Practical Skills - Practical and Conceptual Development)
I have many used printing methods throughout this whole module. The reason for choosing print it that it links to the aesthetic of editorial and the printed page. I had to adapt my process that I had developed in 504 in order to meet with the quick pace time restraints. This was a really benifital skill to gain as editorial job are normally very quick and so being able to adapt the process and still get high quality image is a good progression. I decided to screen print my final image so I would gain an idea of what they may look like in print. Even though this wouldn’t happen in industry as it would be time consuming, it is still good to get an idea of how it would look whilst also helping me highlight other limitation that may occur. I also used a digital approach taking my images into GIF form so they can be applied digitally to websites and apps.

Excellent.
5C7: Produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes to identified problems through the selection and application of visual skills. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Technical Competence)
I carried on a process I developed during the last module of lino printing , editing on Photoshop and screen printing. However with the project there where a lot more time constraints so I adapted the process in order to meet these. By using different techniques such as drawing straight onto Koda trace and foiling, I could keep a high quality of work whilst keeping within the time frame. I have also started to use colour a lot throughout my work, which has really helped to enhance the aesthetic whilst also creating more context.
Excellent .
5D5: Demonstrate the ability to plan and carry out a period of increasingly self-directed study through the appropriate use of workshop areas, studio activities and project management skills. (Key Transferable Skills - Presentation and Evaluation)
I had to keep myself very organized through this project as in order to experiment and create my final images I had to take into consideration the print room time table plus the studio. I would look in advance to see if the print room was available if not I would do studio based tasks then when drop in came available I would print and prep screens. In the beginning, I found it hard to find time to create the work but I became very strict with myself and would set myself mini deadline that I had to reach, the enable me to keep on track and produce work to a high quality within the set time frame.

Excellent.

Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information)

You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module.
Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document, print out a copy to submit with your portfolio of work. Also please cut and paste the text from this box into the final page(s) of your OUIL505 Project Report.

At the start of the module I struggled to find a context with which to fit into. I initially started off in Adult Publishing because I wanted to challenge myself to try something I have never done before, but found as I was reaching the area nothing grabbed my attention, and I decide that I wanted to tackle a social and current issue instead as this made me interested. As such I moved over to product and packaging with the intention of making scarves that represented the different social classes. But after a tutorial, I concluded that my subject/ topic would be better suited in an editorial context. By doing this I would be able to find more material to work from as it is a very current issue and is often written or referred to in articles. I went a bit mad with researching the issue of social class, how classes view each other and how some (particularly the working class) can be said to be demonized more than others. This lead me to look into the theories writers like Owen Jones author of ‘Chavs.’ Jones’s tries to investigate when the working class are demonized and given labels such as ‘chavs’. He mainly puts most of his ideas down to restrictions such as taxations, housing , benefit cuts , lack of jobs for young people and the Torys ( being a strong Labour voter) But he makes a point which inspired and angered me to look further into the issue of demonizing these people. It was that of media coverage. During the incidents such as the disappearance of Shannon Matthews and the London riots , people where stereotyped on mass. So I carried on investigating the consequences of this on the individual and society. This then lead me to the issues of youth imprisonment and the reasons why they may be there e.g. drugs , gun violence and gangs. How young people growing up in working class backgrounds are viewed as a whole in society, the restrictions of that stereotype.  Watching films such as this is England and Starred up made me realize how much young people are open and vulnerable to bigger influences such as gangs and crime. And this was confirmed by serval articles I read. Young people are extremely vulnerable to stereotypes and some conforming or rebelling to what they believe is the path society has set out for them. I think due to the amount of research I undertook it took me a while to try and figure out what I was aiming to stay. It is a huge topic but I think that I was able to narrow it down to working class stereotypes and the youth crime e.g. gangs that surrounds it. Owen Jones had been the key theorist I have turned to on this subject illustrating his article on the Riots in London as a challenge. I think I went about it in a highly narrative way and I’m not sure it works, but I dose fit within the context as key points in the article feature in the image and asethically it is very appealing. Think that I have tried to tackle concept more than aesthetics in thins module however it was hard to hit the right balance. And in some of the images I believe I got this wrong for example the image of the weed leaves and shot scars. Aesthetics took over concept. But with image like the cells for the solitary confidment article and the tower block in the gutter. There is a concept that works and still looks good aesthetically. So I know I can do it , I need to practice more at it and be braver with experimenting with elements like narrative and camera angles because they really help get your point across. However I did overcome one issues with my work and that was lack of colour. I have used a lot of colour in my prints and tried to stick to the same colour scheme as to make them link. I now have a developing understanding of the value colour can add to the work not only with aesthetic but in vital in concept to. I also had to alter my process that I developed in 504 in order to meet the time restrictions and pace of this module , for example re-appropriating the linos and shapes to create new images. This gave me more time to experiment with new process e.g. foiling, which linked into the concepts of some of the images well. Screen print the final designs wouldn’t happen in industry however, but I decide to do this because I wanted to see the images in print form in order to gain a better idea of how they would look if printed with a paper/ magazine. This meant that I had to be contently thinking how the image would work for print. In addition taking them onto more digital platforms by producing GIFS to appear on web sites. Overall the final selection of images do have repeating motifs and colours in them but I’m not sure they work cohesively as a set , I think that I needed to be stricter about the amount of colour I use and the size of the prints. But I think my practice has improved massively, I am making more complex and concept driven imagery, which is what I aimed to do and continue to improve on. Also I had the challenge of  approaching sensitive subject within an area that has a vast audience , and I think I have been able to communicate in mostly a successful and sensitive way.
