5A7:  Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to media, communication, audience and context through the delivery of solutions to brief led problems or clearly identified creative concerns. (Knowledge & Understanding -  Critical Awareness)
At the beginning I did a wide amount of research into my chosen subject area of social class and the stereotypes associated with the different classes for example with the working class, gangs and ‘chavs.’ I read several theories on this subject in order to gain a strong understanding of what I was dealing with. It was a sensitive subject so therefore creatively it did present some problems. Editorial is seen by the masses so my main challenge was creating images that both depicted the issue but in a sensitive yet thought provoking way.
Excellent

5A8: Understand the potential and limitations of technologies and processes used in the production of illustration for 2d, 3d and/or 4d distribution. (Knowledge & Understanding -  Research)
I have analyzed other editorial practitioners work and considered the potential restrictions of working with the intention of your work being put into an editorial context. With editorial, there are quite a lot of limitation such as format, scale and making sure that the image holds relevance to the text and captures the viewer to read the article. Colour can also be a limitation, if you were working for a magazine for example you may get more than two colour but for a broadsheet you may only get one or two colours with which to work with.
Very good.
5B5: Analyse and critically evaluate the impact of social, cultural, technological and/or ethical concerns on the development of solutions to problems relevant to individual creative concerns. Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)
I have undertaken a huge amount of research into the project, which tackled a hard hitting and sensitive issues. The issues I tacked was a social one and I was working within an editorial context, which means that the image would been seen by a wide range audience and so it was important that it did not offend. Which is why the initial research I did was so important. It helped me to gage people’s opinions and views which was really key in helping me develop my own, but also identifying a way which best to approach the issue.
Excellent.

5C6: Explore and apply a range of appropriate practical and conceptual approaches to self-determined ideas, concepts, solutions/proposals in response to own identified intentions and relevant practices. (Practical Skills - Practical and Conceptual Development)
I have many used printing methods throughout this whole module. The reason for choosing print it that it links to the aesthetic of editorial and the printed page. I had to adapt my process that I had developed in 504 in order to meet with the quick pace time restraints. This was a really benifital skill to gain as editorial job are normally very quick and so being able to adapt the process and still get high quality image is a good progression. I decided to screen print my final image so I would gain an idea of what they may look like in print. Even though this wouldn’t happen in industry as it would be time consuming, it is still good to get an idea of how it would look whilst also helping me highlight other limitation that may occur. I also used a digital approach taking my images into GIF form so they can be applied digitally to websites and apps.

Excellent.
5C7: Produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes to identified problems through the selection and application of visual skills. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Technical Competence)
I carried on a process I developed during the last module of lino printing , editing on Photoshop and screen printing. However with the project there where a lot more time constraints so I adapted the process in order to meet these. By using different techniques such as drawing straight onto Koda trace and foiling, I could keep a high quality of work whilst keeping within the time frame. I have also started to use colour a lot throughout my work, which has really helped to enhance the aesthetic whilst also creating more context.
Excellent .
5D5: Demonstrate the ability to plan and carry out a period of increasingly self-directed study through the appropriate use of workshop areas, studio activities and project management skills. (Key Transferable Skills - Presentation and Evaluation)
I had to keep myself very organized through this project as in order to experiment and create my final images I had to take into consideration the print room time table plus the studio. I would look in advance to see if the print room was available if not I would do studio based tasks then when drop in came available I would print and prep screens. In the beginning, I found it hard to find time to create the work but I became very strict with myself and would set myself mini deadline that I had to reach, the enable me to keep on track and produce work to a high quality within the set time frame.

Excellent.

Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information)

You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module.
Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document, print out a copy to submit with your portfolio of work. Also please cut and paste the text from this box into the final page(s) of your OUIL505 Project Report.

At the start of the module I struggled to find a context with which to fit into. I initially started off in Adult Publishing because I wanted to challenge myself to try something I have never done before, but found as I was reaching the area nothing grabbed my attention, and I decide that I wanted to tackle a social and current issue instead as this made me interested. As such I moved over to product and packaging with the intention of making scarves that represented the different social classes. But after a tutorial, I concluded that my subject/ topic would be better suited in an editorial context. By doing this I would be able to find more material to work from as it is a very current issue and is often written or referred to in articles. I went a bit mad with researching the issue of social class, how classes view each other and how some (particularly the working class) can be said to be demonized more than others. This lead me to look into the theories writers like Owen Jones author of ‘Chavs.’ Jones’s tries to investigate when the working class are demonized and given labels such as ‘chavs’. He mainly puts most of his ideas down to restrictions such as taxations, housing , benefit cuts , lack of jobs for young people and the Torys ( being a strong Labour voter) But he makes a point which inspired and angered me to look further into the issue of demonizing these people. It was that of media coverage. During the incidents such as the disappearance of Shannon Matthews and the London riots , people where stereotyped on mass. So I carried on investigating the consequences of this on the individual and society. This then lead me to the issues of youth imprisonment and the reasons why they may be there e.g. drugs , gun violence and gangs. How young people growing up in working class backgrounds are viewed as a whole in society, the restrictions of that stereotype.  Watching films such as this is England and Starred up made me realize how much young people are open and vulnerable to bigger influences such as gangs and crime. And this was confirmed by serval articles I read. Young people are extremely vulnerable to stereotypes and some conforming or rebelling to what they believe is the path society has set out for them. I think due to the amount of research I undertook it took me a while to try and figure out what I was aiming to stay. It is a huge topic but I think that I was able to narrow it down to working class stereotypes and the youth crime e.g. gangs that surrounds it. Owen Jones had been the key theorist I have turned to on this subject illustrating his article on the Riots in London as a challenge. I think I went about it in a highly narrative way and I’m not sure it works, but I dose fit within the context as key points in the article feature in the image and asethically it is very appealing. Think that I have tried to tackle concept more than aesthetics in thins module however it was hard to hit the right balance. And in some of the images I believe I got this wrong for example the image of the weed leaves and shot scars. Aesthetics took over concept. But with image like the cells for the solitary confidment article and the tower block in the gutter. There is a concept that works and still looks good aesthetically. So I know I can do it , I need to practice more at it and be braver with experimenting with elements like narrative and camera angles because they really help get your point across. However I did overcome one issues with my work and that was lack of colour. I have used a lot of colour in my prints and tried to stick to the same colour scheme as to make them link. I now have a developing understanding of the value colour can add to the work not only with aesthetic but in vital in concept to. I also had to alter my process that I developed in 504 in order to meet the time restrictions and pace of this module , for example re-appropriating the linos and shapes to create new images. This gave me more time to experiment with new process e.g. foiling, which linked into the concepts of some of the images well. Screen print the final designs wouldn’t happen in industry however, but I decide to do this because I wanted to see the images in print form in order to gain a better idea of how they would look if printed with a paper/ magazine. This meant that I had to be contently thinking how the image would work for print. In addition taking them onto more digital platforms by producing GIFS to appear on web sites. Overall the final selection of images do have repeating motifs and colours in them but I’m not sure they work cohesively as a set , I think that I needed to be stricter about the amount of colour I use and the size of the prints. But I think my practice has improved massively, I am making more complex and concept driven imagery, which is what I aimed to do and continue to improve on. Also I had the challenge of  approaching sensitive subject within an area that has a vast audience , and I think I have been able to communicate in mostly a successful and sensitive way.

Design Boards

final print 7

I decided to create an extra image because there was a subject that I researched which I wanted to try and tackle and it was the BBC report on a photogrpahers work ,capturing the survivors of shootings. I fell like this project has been sliding towards the negative side of this and I just want to create a positive image to finish on the for the same reasons as the photographer , to celebrate these people.

I was really intrigued by the scaring that had occurred as a result of the attacks , the stomach scaring especially seemed to be almost pattern like, with the scar line running down the middle and the stitch line around the outside.

Using this as a basis , I wanted to experiment and play with creating an abstract pattern from it using a similar colour scheme to the rest of my illustrations but I wanted it to be bold. Due to time constraints I decide not to use any Lino cuts for this and just to draw onto Koda trace and use that to estimated where the shapes would overlay each other. I am finding this technique increasingly useful especially when needing to respond quickly.  It doesn't have the same sort of quality but it dose feel a lot more free flowing and spontaneous which is an aspect I think my work lacks.

With the patterns and shapes based on the scars , foiling it added an extra level. It made the image fell to have value and whilst also enhancing the aesthetic. Overall , I do feel that this image is slightly out of context with the rest but it could still be used within editorial or maybe even campaigning because mocking it up I have replied that because it is a pattern it can fit into lots of different applications. so it could be used of campaign t-shirts, bag, banners, all with the aim of raising awareness of the survivors and of gun crime.

Gif 2.

Another really simple gif. Not happy with this one it is a bit boring and but the movement dose related to drugs slightly or the side effect of them through the movement and colours of this image.

I am slightly kick myself because if I had more time would really develop these ideas and create stings and more complex movement, enhancing the narrative. It is a shame but maybe it is a part that I could think more of in the future and perhaps design a image around it becoming a GIF.

Gif expriment 1

Editorial mediums are moving towards digital platforms and gif or short films are becoming ever more popular and are seen as a new way of enticing the reader.

I wanted to make a quick and simple gif of this image because I thought it would be a really interesting one to try and animate. Due to the image being so complex and detailed I decided to make the movement/ change very simple. I overlaid a completely red version of the image with the original. I wanted the red to symbolise and emergency / flashing light. This brings more emphasis I think on the red box as it stays red and empty when the light fades. It would have been good to add a sound effect like a siren over the top but I think as a gif it would get annoying for the viewer having that on repeat. But if I had more time I would have liked to have made this into a sting. zooming in more on the inmates, adding smaller details like the slight movements of them.
But as it stands I think that is dose bring some emphasis onto to subject of solitary confinement.

Final print 6

I can across another article that refers to the effects of solitary confident on the inmates mental health. It spoken about the side effects and impact of being alone in a cell and isolated. So I decide to come up with a quick response to this. I went back to the original Lino I did for the previous image based on this subject and decided to distort it. I then also added in the Lino cut person and added that body to the distorted window. The reason for doing this was that I wanted  hecticness of the window to act as a metaphor for the persons mind. This idea could be a bit far stretched , but hopefully the body will give the viewer some indication of what I am aiming at.

I also decided to create the outer box to show enclose/ confident and is a repeat of the inner box. I did also try and foil over this but because it is a dark image and subject it did make the image have a lighthearted and almost appealing feel. The was the complete opposite of what I want the mood to be. Keeping it dark and relevant to the topic.

Final print 5

I decided to go a second screen print based again on the article by Owen Jones on the London riots with an approached that focused more on the view of social class and the fact that the riots occurred in the streets.

I decided to go with a stereotype normal associated with the working class and 'chavs' , a tower block. The tower block is placed below a pavement and and with a gutter on the roof. The windows and people themselves  are placed below the level of the gutter, with the pipes/underground. I also decided to incorporate a small narrative into it by zooming in on the windows as too reveal the small people in the windows.

I decided to highlight the tower block and 'from the gutter' sterotype in order for this image make the viewer question the the morals of this and their own views on the subject. I think it dose have a bit more relation to the riots with the street reference but, the first image has more relevance to the text as certain key aspects of the text come into the image.

I also decided to add the red square into it because I thought it was a good relation between the previous image base on solitary confinement. It create an extra narrative between to, almost turning the red square into a symbolic motif. Composition wise as well kept the grid format, it worked really well for this kind of simple narrative.

If I had more time on this image I would have liked to add more frames in so it zooms right out at the beginning into a street scene and at the end you could see inside the peoples houses.

Mega Crit feedback.

Overall really happy with the feed back. I am also really relieved that the foiling is working for the images. I am a bit behind progress wise so over the next few days I really need to crack down and get the piece printed.

4th print and very quick action plan.

Relating to a similar subject as the last print , I wanted to show the process of the drug distribution cycle more. I wanted to expand on the ideas I had in my roughs of the weed plant and the 'street soldiers' on it however I am now starting to panic for time. So I decide to use soda trace to draw an image / pattern of the leaves on to and then scan this on. Saved a lot more time than doing Lino. did the same with the rest of the images and screen printed it. Asthetically the image works , but within context, not a successfully as the others could. I think that it needs to be way clear.  If I have time an may re do this image or if another idea works better place it.
But again used foiling and it fits with the context and helps to ass another dimension to my work whilst improving the aesthetic.

One big problem is that currently I am really struggling for time. I have over estimated the amount of work I have created for myself , however I am going to get these 6 image done !  Very quick action plan :

  • Screens are ready for Monday, over the weekend come up with two effective and simple final designs based on the roughs you have got already, A5 size might be preferable in oder to fit on screen/s.
  • Look back over research to give ideas.
  • Do design boards and project report.
  • Think about presentation , made book already so just need to back prints.
  • Monday print like hell, and back prints, and finalise boards.
  • Tuesday hand in !!

3rd print - based on a section of an artical from Vice magazine.

In an article about the gang scene in New York I found a section on how drugs play a role in the wealth of people in gangs and how they effected those lower in the ranks of the group. The article state several mini drug empires are controlled by the heads in prison who filter down information the still high ranked people out of prison who then pass it on to the other members know as ' street solders.' who the distribute the drugs. I found this an interesting cycle but in particular the pressure that the gangs put on young people and school children to become 'street soldiers.'

So I wanted to illustrate this idea of how the drugs trade consumes a person and this is why I decided to illustrate a rock and the have the person appear from inside it. I wanted to compose it in a similar way as the solitary confinement illustration and have a narrative flowing throughout. I think that the image dose work effectively this way.

I then decide to have a go at a new process foiling which I have never uses before. I found that after adding it to the screen prints that it was actually relevant to what I was depicting. Because for certain drugs like Crack which come in a rock from , and heroin , which is sometimes heated up using a metallic spoon , the process and context use fitted. I am really happy with this ! The colours of the rock , I could have emended slightly to more blues rather than greens. But overall happy. I also like the experimental feel to it aswell, it is not as refined as some the other images so far, but Foiling is something I may stick at. However the question dose arise how would this fit into an industry context ? adding metallic elements to a newspaper won't work but a magazine possibly yes ?

2nd print - in response to the Uk prisons - solitary confinement.

This was an article that dealt with an incredible sensitive and sad subject. I was not sure how to approach this but decided that the idea need to be simple and sympathetic.

I have set myself an aim for this module to  start making complete images , rather than spot illustration. I think that I have started to do that here , which is really good.

Bit stuck for time on this one and so decided carry on keeping the people small and simple. This was a good idea as I think that it illustrated the point well without giving too much information to the viewer. The red box swell serves a similar purpose. It is very symbolic but handles the image of suicide in a sensitive way. I also this the scale of the people to the boxes they are in show the confident part well and shows the loneliness of images in solitary confinement.

Again I uses the same process as before and screen printing it. The texture comes out really well in this image and it was completely by accident that this happened, but I think it dose add quality to the work. The blue lines representing the bars that run very faintly through the image were a last minute addition. I felt that it need to be more obvious that it was prison as before it didn't come across clearly. But the lines also worked well for clothing the people. This helps massively in making the body much more obvious and is a small amount of detail that works.

Overall much happier with this image as it relies to the article well, fits the nature of it and communicates a clear narrative that has effective comopsition.
I really want to try and make Gifs of this, but depending on time I will have to see.

SHOT- Kathy Shorr.

  • New York photographer Kathy Shorr.
  • Shorr's aim was to photograph survivors of shooting and show there heroics.
  • 'Everbody can be shot.'
  • Some of the subjects where shot in :
  • The gym
  • shopping centre.
  • home.
  • cinemas
  • church
  • She agrees that it is a dark subject but ' there is an incredible amount of light.'
  • The subjects wanted to be photographed in oder to help others.
  • Shorr doesn't want to see the subjects or anyone who has been shot and lives as victims , they are survivors. And there action of getting up and carrying on are heroic.
  • I find the patterns of the scars fascinating , they dose seem to be an element of beauty to the scaring on individuals stomach. However they are large , and  some of the other injures create by the shot are life effecting ,at the same time they must be a constant reminder to the surviour of what happened, but this makes it all the more penitent and impactful.

Article Uk prisons - ' Holding child inmates in solitary confinement against UN torture rules.- the independent.'

  • Soiltary confinement cause ' considerable distress and psychological damages.'
  • Some children have been driven to self- harm due to the server emotional distress they are put through.
  • Article 6 of UN convention against torture states that government must prevent any ' any acts of curse , inhuman or degrading treatment to punishment'.' from occurring hands of officials.
  • Segregation.
  • 'The confinement of prisoners for 22 hours or more a day without meaningful human contact.'
  • At least six teenage boys under the age of 18 have been held in solitary confinement way over the stated time for the isolation. ranged from weeks to months.
  • .... mother of inmate.
  • lawyer... both page 4 copy paragraphs.
  • Tim Farron -' These are some of the most vulnerable members of our society and their time in the younger offenders institutions must be focused on education and rehabilitation. I urge the government to investigate these claims.'
  • Spokesperson for the Ministry of Justices - 'When young people in custody are putting themselves or others at risk , segregation can be used as a last resort for limited periods of time when no other form of intervention is possible.'
  • ' The safest and welfare of young people held in custody is a priority and we will be setting out our plans to reform the way we manage young offenders.'
  • Suicide rate- high.

roughs 5

  • Street gutter. Following a similar format to that of the box cells , 3d square.
  • Can really play with angles on this one ! quite like the idea of looking down from above and being able to see the group below.
  • Maybe could use the intricate pattern of the uderground pipes.
  • I needs more context though. Dog?
  • Like the idea again of scale and the small man on top of the building and gutter.

roughs 4

  • Weed leaves, idea- a weed plant with people in a cage/ cell at the top controlling the workers on the plant below.
  • Making it a manufacotring chain of drugs. related to the gang leaders and street solders handling the distribution.
  • Need to try different angles, might work from within the leaves?

3rd roughs

  • Going back through my old roughs and picking out ideas that might work was a useful thing to do as I didn't realise before that I had effective Ideas that could work, as so by doing saved time.
  • I also saved some time not cutting anymore new Lino for this image.
  • I used Koda trace and drew the different layers onto the trace using a black pencil. This enabled me to see how the shapes would form and overlay one another.
  • It was much faster this way , as I got an image quickly which will hopefully leave me with lots of time to experiment with composition and colour.

roughs 2nd print.

    • Based on the box idea I initially had with the dog , adding a human in side instead.
    • I also know test that the way I was laying the roughs out in my book and the way I was drawing the boxes really worked well as a composition for an image.
    • By creating smaller roughs from this I was to work out how to position the boxes and which angle was best.
  • Also how the people could fit into it and the scale of box to human.
  • I know that I want the box to be quite large compared to the human as I want the isolation and lonely element to come across strong.
