batsford prize

The Brief is interpreting nature. So I initially had the idea of looking into cases where nature has been mistreated and hurt by human intervention, for example oil leaks from oil plants in the center of the sea. Birds get covers in oil and then die or are injured. This was my initial idea when trying to come up with this piece and I based some of the patterns on the lines and shapes that occur when oil leaks. But I found as I was working on the piece that it changed into more of a piece about the beauty of nature and found when putting colours to the image that it would have been to complicated to use more then 1 or 2 colours for the background as the image as a whole is so detailed. As a result the background has lost it's meaning slightly but works a lot better with the other colours and details involved.

But it could also be read as preserving nature as the blue surrounds the bird almost encompassing it. The plants and leaves are growing in different areas of the image and the green colour that occurs through suggest goodness and healthiness. And the yellow and light blue are positive colours so I think that this gives the image a feel good atmosphere. But I have surprised myself when making this piece as I didn't expect for it to work as well as it has done. Because before I regarded my use of colour as a weakness but I can now see how I can use it to enhance my strengths and how it balances out detail also helps with the images composition.
