Development and roughs for editorial- studio brief 2

experiments with trying to draw in a simple way. These animals, humans and trees that I drew have formed the basis for nine roughs.

The rough on the left is the first on I have decided to develop as a final one:

  •  It has a simple concept but could be draw with detail and with block print, also it has the potential to be a very interesting image with a mixture of these.
  •  When in the crit , the correct information was communicated and the key features that people like was the receptiveness of the trees compared to the more chaotic industrial scene.

The left is the one that is going to be finally developed.

  •  more meed doing to this image the scale is going to have to be change to 20-10.5cm because none of the original ideas for that size worked as well as this one.
  •  More needs to happen in the image. The correct information was communicated but something more needs to be down. e.g. he could be reading a book about trees and thinking of trees.

I used a bit of gouache in this one just to see how certain parts would look in print (block colour) i think that this will work well especially the clouds and mountains?

This bottom idea is the going to be the final developed image.

  •  Again I want this image to be repetitive , to give the image more impact  e.g.  enlarging the chimneys in the background and encasing the dead animals running along the bottom more.
  •  Changing the shape of the trees and maybe have different animals at the top of the trees.

  • Final images ,  need to experiment with other mediums more and colour but green will be colour that features as it relates to the article.

Photoshop tutorials: Outcomes and Process.

When you have scanned the image into photoshop , you can go to adjustments then levels and adapt the lightness and darkness of the image. it balance the colour out.

Quick selection tolls allows you to select certain parts of the image and colour them in to remove them from the image.

Adjustments, image size- Changing the image sizes in d.p.i allow for the image to be seen clearly in both print out and screen 72 d.p.i for screen.
300 d.p.i for printing out.

Using the quick selection tool yo can select a certain part of the image and free transform it so it comes away from the original image.

Adjustments, image , hue saturation. this toll can make images black and white and increase colour.

Increasing colour.

Creating your own brush. Using the magic wand tool you can select the image or part of the image you want to create into a tool . Then go to edit and scroll down to define brush preset.

Give the brush a name and click okay.

Layers:

Inverting the original image, duplicating that layer, enlarging it and setting the settings to mulitply.

This is another one of my 5. I created a new layer and used different textured brush tools and selection tools to paint in certain sections then overlayed that layer with the origial image.

This was a very similar techniques that I used to the last one. However I used the selection tolls to rub out selected areas to create a print like texture.  I also adjusted to opacity of the brush and the image, so they would be lighter and blend together well. Also using the hue saturation tool to dull down the blue slightly.

This next image was made by using a mask. to create this you create  new layer, then go to layers , create a clipping mask. place linked image onto the new layer and adjust the layer setting till you get the effect you want.

second task , line drawing.

I'm not very happy with this page , firstly because it took me a while to get an idea of how to go about drawing a wet sloth. The reason I chose to draw a sloth was because of the position it was in, I was very sinister and I thought the body features of a sloth would make an interesting character. But because the animal is covered in fur it did make it really hard to translate accurate shape.

This next page is slightly better but still not good enough , there is more characters but has nothing relating to mythical creatures, in my next sketches I tried to focus more on the shape then moved away from reference and started to use my imagination more.

Sketch book- first task

Best page from first task:

I really like this page because it shows a variety of techniques and a range of different characters. It also isn't over crowed and using gouache gives some of the drawings a good texture. Lots of shape and different ways of drawing fur also makes the page interesting . I enjoyed drawing this page as well and enjoyed drawing the different creature, I use my imagination for this page and I prefer  drawing from imagination rather then from reference.

final bear poster evaluation.

The aspects that I am happy with in this final poster are:

  • The techniques used, really bold, neat, effective finish.
  • Each shape is consistent and the varying sizes contrasts well together.
  •  The character design of the bear is really nice.Keeping the same expression and body language  throughout adds a humours element. A grumpy who is just getting thrown about and doesn't really care what happens to him.
  • The colours could be slightly boring but , I think that they allowed me to add bolder details , for example the texture on the blown up bear.

Thing that I found difficult :

  • Idea generation. Most of the initial ideas I came up with where over complicated.
  • The layout was also hard to compose as I was working with set shapes, but changing the shape of the bear help with this.
  •  In some places on the final poster I used gouache, and in part I think that this was a mistake for example on the propeller hat I over used the white and it looks messy.

Things that I would develop further:

  • Experimenting more with colour ,  maybe a lift yellow or light blue background.
  • Considering the layout more , it is squished a bit in the middle and could have used with being spread out more , make the text easier to read.
  • Type needs more development as well , not that easy to read which is a shame.

I feel happy with the way the poster has communicated and looks , but the main feed back from the crit was really good but most people liked the look more better then the concept.

A-Z typology poster -development and ideas

Quick try outs of a few of the final ideas.

  •  Really happy with the giant bird and the tiny bear, has a nice narrative.
  • It was a good idea to do the tiny bears it gives a nice contrast to the medium and the large blown up bear. It will also allow me to add tiny details which will make the poster more interesting rather then just the same sized bear being printed over again.

Q is my favourite letter as well , again a bit of a narrative and I think it adds a nice imaginative element.

Typography development for bear poster.

I was running out of time and really needs to get on with the final poster so I had to come up with the type really quickly. To solve this problem I used gouache and a fine brush to quickly paint in the letters and then roughly shaded certain areas. This worked surprisingly well and so I was happy to leave the idea at that but will shrink the letters down for the final thing.

A-Z poster ideas and development- Lino cut outs.

These are the lino stampes I made for the final poster. I used lino substitute for the stamps instead of a hard surfaced lino because the softer surface give a better print and it is easier to cut through. By using the stamps it will allow me to keep the shapes and the style of the piece constant.

I also did other stamps for the cloud , rocket , dinosaur. the bird and the spaceship.

A-Z typology brief -development and ideas.

This was a transformative moment. I spent ages trying to think of a way to show the bear filled with helium, and I had the idea of just cutting out a massive round piece of Lino and printing that in grey and then going over the top with brush pen. Really happy with how it worked out and looks good to and when added to the final poster with a few adjustments it will communicate well.
Good texture in this one , quickly drawing with the brush pen works , and emphasises the shape of the blown up bear.

Final full idea, really happy with it, could add a helium tank which the bear is inhaling the helium out off to make it clear, to think that this would work will just have to try it.

character development for bear poster.

I printed the bear several times and tried experiments in brush pen and fine liner. This allowed me to find the best way to draw the detail in the shapes. The fine liner proved a problem because the in I printed in blocked up the pen and so I wouldn't work , but the brush pen gave the effect I was looking for so that material worked the best. The best one is when the fur is around the face but not on the belly , short single lines fill in that well and it allows for lots of a verity of line work and makes the bear look more interesting.

Brain storm of ideas for bear poster.

This was the final brain storm before I need to get on with the final poster and this was the first idea where i manage to come up with a full alphabet, yay!. And with most of the idea I could imagine how i could illustrate them.  There are a few that I may change for example o , t and u I still need more development , i think that i could come up with better ideas for them.

Ideas discussed in seminar- sketchbook.

  • Your sketchbook is the place where you both gererate and develop ideas.
  • It is your main tool and is used to visual explore subjects, and should have very little annotation.
  • A sketchbook is a place where you can experiment with different mediums, find new tools and is used for drawing different things, of you don't draw it well first time the you can draw it again until your happy with it.
  • You can draw from both imagination and reference.
  • It can be stupid, serious and personal, it is a visual diary.
  • it is a good place to make mistakes in, and it is good if you make them because you can improve and develop from this.
  • A sketchbook should have decent paper quallity and shouldn't be ristrictive for example i like to work A3 because it allows me to produce large and small pieces. Also I can fit several sketches on one page which makes it easier for development because i don't have to keep turning over pages to see what my last sketch was.
  • Drawing your sketchbook should feel like taking notes, trying to include as much information as possible and this should help to generate ideas.
  • Your sketchbook is your own process.

Observational drawings

Best 3: Observational drawings.

Wild dog(drawing from reference): I chose this image because I like the line work that is encompassed into it. Also the way I have used dark blocks of shape along side these details , they work well together and make an interesting image.

Wild dog - quick sketch: I like this one because it was a good experiment in trying to use expressive bold lines to try and show the shape, and it actually helped me to get a better idea of the shape rather than the detailed one. Mainly because I was focusing on the shape, rather then the detail within the shape.

Terry the cactus( drawing from observation)- With this observation I tried to focus more on translating the shapes and details, rather then drawing each individual part, because I was working with a very complicated object. I like the use of different tools, ink and brush , ink and quill and brush pen for the bolder lines. They all work really well together as they add really nice contrasts of line.

Drawing for reference , you are working from a picture that someone else has taken and composed, and it is useful for getting basic information about the object you are trying to draw . However it is very restricting sometimes ether because of the angle the photo was taken or the lighting. This is where it differs from drawing from your own observations, you can control the angle and lighting , and you also get a 360 degree view of your object , which you cannot get or change with a photograph.

  • I found today particularly challenging, especially when it came to drawing from reference. I found it hard at first to try and translate what I was seeing onto the page because the image was at angle , so it was hard to try and get the drawing at the right angle and draw to to proportion. So I prefer drawing from observation mainly because you can alter the angle and I felt more confident with translating it and am much happier with the outcomes.

  • Making multiples of drawings of the same thing was a good thing to do. I allowed me to experiment with the way I was drawing it ,but also I could change what I was looking at so in one I could have drawn the hole object , but in another I could have just focused on one section. I enables you to get a better sense of how the object works.

  • The materials that we had to used today I enjoy using so I work with ink and brush a lot, but trying to draw accurate images with them was hard without doing any light pencil out lines before hand. So that is something that I need to practice at. However with this material it allows for a wide range of line work and you can create a variety of image that can be quickly draw or have time taken over them with tones.

The 3 best observational drawings.

1st image: Old rose.

I really like this image because of the materials I used. Brush pen is so effective, and when I put pressure on the pen it faded out the lines and feathered out. I think that this effect worked really well because it added texture to the image and the object I was drawing had lots of texture , but trying to show this was a challenge, however by using the brush pen I think help me achieve this. If I was to do this image again though I would definitely consider colour because the flower did have some interesting colours and I think that it would add to the image.

2nd Image: Elephant.

This was a section of and elephant sculpture,I was really happy with the final image however it took me quite a while to draw this and it was hard to capture all of the detail so I had to use my imagination and make up some of the shapes, so it was another challenge to really look and just draw what I saw. So if I was to do this image again that would be my main focus.

3rd Image: Owl

I drew this toward the end of the task, whilst in the discovery center. I used Brush pen again for this one , because of the texture , but also I had two minutes in which to draw this image so I thought the quickest way to do this would be mark making instead of line work. Really happy with this drawing because I actually looked more at the object rather then what I was drawing , which was an improvement, but the brush pen again was a really successful tool and it was a good choice.

Observational drawing is a really good task to do in order to improve your drawing technique. By doing this task my drawing and my confidence in drawing has improved. For example this owl drawing above is something which I don't think I would have been able to do if I hadn't been practicing at looking and drawing objects. However at the beginning of the task  I wasn't looking at the object much just drawing and guessing at what it looked like , so next time I do a observational drawing of something  for example that is detailed I will take time to try and draw what I see rather then what I think is there.  A lot of the images I drew however where in black and white ,so next time I will incorporate colour because it is an essential part of an image and I didn't do any experimenting with adding colour in this task , so it something which I need to do next time.
