Richard Hawley interview written by Peter Robinson.

  • Robinson asks the questions ' Tell me about Disgraceland, your shed .' reply ' Well it's a shed that I've called Disgraceland. Is there anything else you want to know?"
  • 'Yes'. Did you have to get planning permission or dose it stand  below the required 2.5 m eaves hight established by the government's permitted development rules?' 
  • Reply' Oh well , you see, we had issue with that. First , it's a structure that can be removed at any time - and now i've made that public it will probably mean someone walks off with it... Don't worry about that highest point, it' the lowest.' 
  • ' Well there's very little electricity there - except when i'm recording. No it's usually just me sitting , staring at the floor for hours...'
  • '...A lot of musicians get stuck into the celebrity thing, which is a colossal , colossal mistake. You know why people run out of ideas? it's so simple. You turn into the observed , rather than the observer. 
  • 'The minute you stop being a musician and you as an individual become bigger than your music , you've lost it. You're fucked.'
'Disgraceland is the name given to his shed-slash-studio. The actual Graceland is currently taking Christmas booking; package rates start at £171, and include collectable Elvis bear.' - Robinson. 


Richard Hawley in this article seems very down to earth about he fact he is a working musician and that this is his living. I would also say that what fascinates me about the way of making his music is the fact he records it in his shed. You hear a lot of artist going to big mainstream company studios to record but Hawely takes it right back down to the basics and makes his own recordings in his own space, almost like a new musician starting out. I think that this is a very interesting quality and gives his music that extra personal element. He also remains quite modist about it and dosn't seem to see it as a big thing but after watching this clip it is clear that it dose have some integral part to his music.
From watching his music videos they seem to have a very reflective and thoughtful element to it. 



For example 'Heart of oak ' from his most resent album seems to have , what could be said as a strong personal family connection. The video shows what appears to be his arm being led around hills and meadows by different people. could these be people in his life ? 
Nature also had influence. A lot of his videos include landscapes and nature but also he was part of a campaign about saving the urban tree with Sheffield and beyond.  





From this information i think I have a platform in which to work from, so I just need to start roughing and making.
