Article - How NewYork Gang Culture is changing.- Vice


  • Blood and Crisps- rival main gangs.
  • The police blames gin voilances in that 'small group of men wrapped up in localised gang activity.'
  • Grassroots initiatives - led by former gang members.
  • 'Every nationality is represented within the gang culture... and with the African - American population in New York State prisons being the largest , the gangs will reflect that.'
  • The article claims ' The largest ethic groups in the area will dictate what type of gangs you see.' 
  • Hybrid Gangs- cities only - represent local housing estates , parks, city blocks and streets. E.g. 4 Block, YGz...
  • Rise in hybrid gangs not related to the 'super gangs.' Blood and Crisps e.c.t
  • The bloods have more members due to the high membership in places with low income housing. 
  • 'Gangs provide protection , belonging and respect.' Kids today believe in power by numbers.' 
  • The artical claims that poverty plays a 'major role' in the making of these groups and neighbourhood reflects the poverty. 
  • The gangs effect- but impact is seen a negitive. 
  • Local gangs benefit from the drug dealing proceeds. 'The cornerstone of New York's urban underworld economy...'
  • Gangs look to schools for recruitment. 'Drug sales have become the leading source of income for gangs .' Heroin, crack cocaine, Marijuana, MDMA (Molly).
  • Packaged at weed houses , trap houses.
  • Guns become equalisers , homicides, shootings in urban communities.Drive by shootings or walk up shootings. The artical claims that rape is also used as a weapon to control civilian populations. 
  • Turf wars,.
  • Prison gangs- Surenos - they control it from with in and then flow the drugs down onto the street and their' Street Soldiers' will filter the earnings back to them.
  • ' It's the wild , Wild West.' 
  • 'These younger kids have no fear... older heads see that... guns have empowered a 13-year-old to pull out on a 25 - year -old. 
  • The prison system.
