5A4:  Make appropriate use of a range of research methods to investigate a topic and produce work relating to the critical, cultural or social context of art and design. (Knowledge & Understanding - Research and Critical Awareness)
When asked to tackle book covers for example I read the books as to gain a greater understanding of the authors writing and the way I the reader reacted to the book. It also helps to highlight key themes and characters. I then did further background research into the societies of that time and for example In Cold Blood, I considered the killers and the Clutter family. I also conducted 1st hand research when going to see Jack Garret live and using research from that to inspire the album cover. And also looking into current practitioners and products that are already in industry and critically analyzed them.
Very Good.

5B3: Generate ideas, concepts, proposals, solutions and/or arguments using the language,
materials, processes and techniques of a designated discipline. (Cognitive Skills - Problem
Analysis, Problem Solving)
I have used several methods in which to generate ideas including using roughs to get basic ideas down and then experimented further using other mediums and software such as test prints and Photoshop. I have also had to adapt the way I work in which to meet the brief requirements for example changing my technique to work with type as a starting point with which forcing myself to think about the design first and the image second.

Excellent.
5C3: Respond to set briefs or proposals in a professional context. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Conceptual Development)
To give my images a high-quality finish I decide to screen print the vast majority of my outcome. The reason because mainly of contextual and aesthetical reasons but also it is a technique that before this module I had confidence in but, through developing this technique I have start use several different colour separations. This has brought my practice forward and is improving. Also with the In Cold Blood cover I feel like my typography and design skills are improving.
Excellent.
5D3: Exercise self-management skills in managing their workloads and meeting deadlines/apply interpersonal and social skills to interact with others. (Key Transferable Skills, Organisation, Communication and Evaluation)
I have met all of the deadlines on time and finished the work to a professional standard. In the beginning I did get struggle with sticking to the action plans I had made in the initial week. This was due to other modules that where running alongside with this. In order to tackle this problem, I set myself day where I would just focus on responsive and set myself strict mini deadlines to make sure the work was done in advance before the deadline so before submission I had time to make small amendments.
Working in collaboration I found positive experience. I gained a better understanding of how our individual skill sets work together and how we produced work that if we would be working individually I know I would struggle with and it would take a lot more time and may not be up to the same quality.

Excellent.

Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information)

You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module.
Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document and post the PDF as your final post on your OUIL503 blog. Also, please cut and paste the text from this box into the final page(s) of your OUIL503 Project Report.

I was initially very daunted by the thought of having to create work for live briefs. It was something that I have never really done before and I had pre fears of accidentally missing deadlines, struggling to understand the briefs and not meeting the requirements. However, I never missed a deadline but in some of the briefs for example YCN – Royal Opera House, and the Moby mini brief set by Newstateman I did struggle to understand exactly what they are asking for. I think to tackle this problem in the future I need to really analyze the brief, maybe rewrite it in a way that I understand and simplify it. This will hopefully limit confusion and pin point exactly what I am aiming for. I felt like my organization at the beginning of this module was lacking slightly in that I didn’t stick to my original action plan due to  other modules where running alongside this. As a result responsive got lost a bit. However, in order to catch up on time I set one day aside each week for me to tackle responsive. I also started to set myself strict mini deadlines to make sure the work was done in advance before the deadline so before submission I had time to make small amendments. This helped me to ensure that all the work was done. I feel like the work was also completed to a high standard and I think that this was largely helped by the process I chose to use.

Screen and Lino printing became my main methods of image making. I have a lot of confidence in these areas and knew that this was an aesthetic that worked, but in addition it also was appropriate for most of the briefs I chose to address. It was really good as well to apply these methods to lots of different outcomes. It made me realize that you can still apply your own way of image making, you don’t have to amend it much. Although, due to time constrains I had to re-use imagery, but just re-appropriating and adjusting it slightly enabled me to save time and still have an appropriate outcome. So for the future it would be useful to build up a back catalogue of lino prints and print textures. I did cut out the whole alphabet out of lino, which was initially very time consuming but is useful because I now have a type I can use for other briefs and is easily emendable. Aesthetically during this module, I have started to incorporate colour into my practice. Before I just tended to make black and white images but now I have gained a much stronger understanding of how the correct colour pallet can really enhance an image it context. I have started to rarely used black and white now, and colour has started to become an integral part of my illustrations. The one image that gave me confidence in perusing colour more was the bird print I did for the Batsford Prize. From the feedback from both tutors and peers it made me see how my work could greatly be improved by the addition of colour and how it made it much more appealing to the viewer as well as reflecting on my blog and looking back at previous work.

Typography was something else that I had to tackle in order to meet with the penguin brief specifications for both the adult fiction and non-fiction book covers. ‘Strong us of typography’. In the past type has been a big weakness of mine and it was something I needed to grasp in order to meet these requirements. I decided to approach this in an illustrative way, taking my skills of printing and applying them to type. I initially wanted to use letter press but wasn’t able to so decide to cut the letters out of lino. I was then able to use my own type across the two book covers. I think the strongest design was for In Cold Blood. I surprised myself in how well the design went because I had incorporated both type, colours and, once screen printed I was happy with the outcome.

Collaboration was another part of this module that I was initially worried about but once I had dived into it, it was fine. And I found it an extremely beneficial process and positive experience. It is something I would definitely consider in the future. From collaborating with someone from graphic design I gained a better understanding of how our individual skill sets work together and how we produced work that if we would be working individually I know I would struggle with and it would take a lot more time.
Given that there was just two of us as well enabled effective communication, it was easier to bounce ideas around and take in each other’s thoughts. It was easier to organize weekly or twice weekly meetings. However, given that we were such a small group that did mean that the work load was more but we were both hard workers and came up with an outcome we were both happy with and that met the brief specification.

Confidence I think has been the main problem for me throughout this module, was really lacking at the start but am gaining more. But once I started handing in the briefs I started to gain some. However, I have become much more confident in other aspects of my practice. I am pleased that I have started to use colour more and have gained more confidence in elements such as composition and type. I still feel in some areas such as context behind my images still needs improving, but this is where understanding the briefs better and not overthinking the outcome comes into it. This module has also helped me to identify the types of briefs we are likely to get and where I may fit into the industry.

Richard Hawley Disgraceland tour poster final proposed outcome.

I am fairly happy with this outcome. Due to time constraints I wish I had spent longer on this brief as I feel like there is still image possibilities that I haven't explored and would have benefited from doing. I could have come up with a more interesting idea that had a deeper concept. However, I think that the aesthetic of the print fit his music well. The image is quite clam and when listening to his music, that is what I thought but also that it dose have a very reflective , thoughtful element. This is why I have reduced the amount of objects in the shed and why there are birds flying out and above the shed.

The final image is a a completely different idea to original thoughts I had. But I am really glad I did that background research as I think if I would have gone with my original idea it would have been all wrong. This image incorporates his personal life a bit and demonstrates the personal connection he had with his music. I think the colour scheme also links into the atmosphere of clam and thoughtfulness. As well as the patterns around the edge, however I am wondering weather adding the borders in has perhaps made the image too crowed.

I have been able to incorporate his interest in the hatch prints by using my own cut out letters that I made for penguin. I am not to sure about the composition of these , I thing I could have been braver and bolder with this instead of sticking to the frame. But the writing is readable and resembles the letter press style he wanted.

A final point , I kept the wood theme going through out because I was inspired by the song ' Heart of Oak.'  When watching the video it seemed again personal and could have been a reflection of him and his family and there relationship. It is one of his more resent songs and has been publicised quite a bit so could be well know for the audience who attend the tour. Links in quite well with the shed too.

Richard Hawley Experiments

Original Linos for Hawley poster

I was struggling for ideas so I decided to draw and cut out the images I had gained from the background research.

There where several key elements that I pulled out that I wanted to focus on and I felt that needs to be in the image.
In most of his posters already he has his Gretsch 56 guitar. Really love the shape this guitar , and the smaller shapes that coincide it. I chose to cut this out large (A3) scale, so I was able to add in fine details and into it. Also when scaled down it had a detailed quality.

The prints above where done quickly and on a much smaller scale as they are not going to be too significant to the image. But they are there incase. The half a tree here I thought would help the composition of it a bit more , and also because I found out that Richard Hawley did a campaign a while back in support of saving urban trees.

This flock of birds is just made with ink and brush. I thought that cutting it out of Lino would waste time and I wanted the quickness of the brush to influence that shape that where made, add variation.

It took me a while to get the proportions of the shed right. I have drawn it open inside because I want to place the objects inside the shed. This will hopefully provide some context to the image and add a small narrative too.  I also chose to cut this out A3 because I plan for this to be the central part of the image. Disgrace land is his shed and it makes sense for this to be the focal point.

Richard Hawley interview written by Peter Robinson.

www.theguardian.com/music/2015/oct/22/richard-hawley-30-minutes-interview

  • Robinson asks the questions ' Tell me about Disgraceland, your shed .' reply ' Well it's a shed that I've called Disgraceland. Is there anything else you want to know?"
  • 'Yes'. Did you have to get planning permission or dose it stand  below the required 2.5 m eaves hight established by the government's permitted development rules?'
  • Reply' Oh well , you see, we had issue with that. First , it's a structure that can be removed at any time - and now i've made that public it will probably mean someone walks off with it... Don't worry about that highest point, it' the lowest.'
  • ' Well there's very little electricity there - except when i'm recording. No it's usually just me sitting , staring at the floor for hours...'
  • '...A lot of musicians get stuck into the celebrity thing, which is a colossal , colossal mistake. You know why people run out of ideas? it's so simple. You turn into the observed , rather than the observer.
  • 'The minute you stop being a musician and you as an individual become bigger than your music , you've lost it. You're fucked.'
'Disgraceland is the name given to his shed-slash-studio. The actual Graceland is currently taking Christmas booking; package rates start at £171, and include collectable Elvis bear.' - Robinson.

Richard Hawley in this article seems very down to earth about he fact he is a working musician and that this is his living. I would also say that what fascinates me about the way of making his music is the fact he records it in his shed. You hear a lot of artist going to big mainstream company studios to record but Hawely takes it right back down to the basics and makes his own recordings in his own space, almost like a new musician starting out. I think that this is a very interesting quality and gives his music that extra personal element. He also remains quite modist about it and dosn't seem to see it as a big thing but after watching this clip it is clear that it dose have some integral part to his music.
From watching his music videos they seem to have a very reflective and thoughtful element to it.

For example 'Heart of oak ' from his most resent album seems to have , what could be said as a strong personal family connection. The video shows what appears to be his arm being led around hills and meadows by different people. could these be people in his life ?
Nature also had influence. A lot of his videos include landscapes and nature but also he was part of a campaign about saving the urban tree with Sheffield and beyond.

From this information i think I have a platform in which to work from, so I just need to start roughing and making.

1st print in response to Owen Jones - London riot article.

This image I will admit is very abstract, and isn't obvious when looking at the title that it relates to it.
However when you read the article it dose make a bit more sense. I decided to go through Jones piece and pick key elements which he refers to in relation with the stereotype of the chav. He reflects on the tweets that where posted about the groups involved in the rioting , 'Chav spring.' ( the plants.) , 'Wolfpack of feral inner- city waifs and strays' ( the dog).  There is also a really important argument that happens in this article about how immigration and black people were claimed by David Starkey (historian) played a part.

Starkey refers to a controversial speech made by tory MP Enoch Powell ' Rivers of blood.' The speeches stated that ' immigration would plunge Britain into violent chaos.' - Jones.
Starkey was completely wrong in this claim , most of the individuals involved where white , not black. This is why I added a red line across the image.

So each element of the image do have a relation to the article. I am glad that I decided to cut the dog out of Lino, I think that this has worked really well and adds a good contrast to the more simpler elements of the image. To give the picture more flow I decided to draw/paint the rest with ink and brush. The free flowing sense to get with this technique I thinks adds another element to it and it allowed me to save time and play around with colour more. Colour is still a new thing for my practise but I am happy with the colours chosen for this. The mixture of greens is good and I think that this helps the red to stand out and be striking.  Composition is a bit weak , the red dose cover the animals head and this doesn't make it stand out much , it needed to. I did want the river to run through the whole image and when experimenting on photoshop I found that this was the only way I could get the image to work cohesively. I also decided to screen print it. I have found through doing the process of printing / making the original elements, photoshopping them and then screen print , to have worked in the past to successful level and I really want to carry this on for this module.  It gives the image a great aesthetic and also helps the different elements to look more blended.

However I am aware that if this was an actual editorial brief from industry this process would just not happen due to time constrains , as such it is benifital to do this sort of thing now as it will enable me to build up an archive of images , textures and colours to mash together to create images. So moving away from analog to a more digital approach.

Roughs

  • Box - symbolises confinement , trapped, enlocsed, dark?
  • 3D I think gives more room to be experimental with the composition and to tall a narrative. It also has the potential to make up a whole image rather than just a motif.
  • Darker sides light back wall.

  • Dog or feral wolves. refers to in Owen Jones article , How can I make this relate to the text more?
  • not sure the leaves are working , not too sure what the represent.
  • Like the idea of the rib cage being the cage though.

Mono Print Experiments.

I wanted to play around with the darker tone of the stereotypes placed against working class people. The phrase ' feral dog' sounds shocking and is a demonstration of how the class system is corrupt.

So I experimented with drawing the faces into the ink and how the dig could tie into this. But I think i need to be careful about the connotation and how this may come across. I need to take it with a sympathetic angle and a vunrablility. I want people to question this stereotype and weather it is right that we place these kind of labels onto people.

I may us monoprint as part of my final image because it is a really quick and flexible method of working . However I think my technique will need prefecting a bit more so the final outcomes look more refined .

Project proposal changes

What do you intend to do and why?

‘To whom does design address itself: to the greatest number, to the specialist of an enlightened matter, to a privileged social class?’- Charles Eames.

I intend to produce a series of 6 screen prints , that represent the social issues of gang culture and the impact this has on young people who are involved. In this brief, I would like to investigate the differences in social classes, and the sterotypes that effect the lower classes, and how this effects the overall view of society . Also, how are these different sectors are viewed within the whole society and how the background effects the people within it. The aspects that are seen as defining them and makes them of that class. However I am going to choose to work away from the stereotypes of the classes as, this brief requires me to make  images that meet with an articals requirements whist also thinking of the viewer and that the image will be viewed on mass. How do I want it to come across? I want to come at this subject from a unique angle and try through my work show the target audience the issues faceing young people in gangs and the detrimential effect that it is having on society.  In previous briefs, I have approached social and political subjects with an editorial point of view, taking into consideration differing points of view and my own, and I would like to keep this approach but I need to make sure it appeals to a wider and more diverse audience, however communicating my own opinions is still vital and is a key element in my practice. The subject of class is a wide and hotly debated area which means that there should be lots of points of veiw, theories and works to start producing ideas from. My main audience that I want to aim for are adults ages 20-30. I primarily want to address young adults as they are the type of people that I think need to be made more aware of issues like this, as there is a lack I believe within society of young people of being politically engaged and don’t recognize wider social problems. Even though it is increasing, it can be improved and it could be currently and in the future it is part of the creative industry and any visual communicators responsibility to highlight significant issues.

THEMES / SUBJECTS
What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include theoretical and non-creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary Illustration practice.
GENERAL THEMES:

-        How dose an individuals class define them?
-        Why do we still have classes within our society?
-        How are the different classes still viewed within society?
-        Dose social class have a direct line to gang culture ?
-        How dose gang culture effect wide society?

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS:
-        How dose classes act compard to one another.
-        The attitudes of the different classes towards each other.
-        Possible way , if any, equality within society could be achieved.
-        Gang culture- how individuals within them are veiwd.

PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION
What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production/ distribution of work in response to selected briefs?

I intend to work primarily with print as my main production. I aim to make the prints using suitable stock and a verity of new and different techniques. will help further my practice and open my understanding of working within editorial. I also aim to use colour a lot more in this module. Colour would make the image much more appealing to the buyer and I can use it as a tool to help illustrate the concept behind the images.
SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA:

Editoial – addressing articles that contain issues of about stereotyping the lower class and gang culture.

AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS:
-       Young adults 20-30 – want to promote equality within society , make my age group more aware of this social issue and start a positive conversations about it.

PRODUCTION/Distribution Methods:
-       Print for example screen printing enables me to recreate the images fast, effectively and consistently. The image remains the same and will allow me to print several editions of the designs.
-       Lino printing, slightly more time consuming but effective for aesthetical purposed but also a strong skill of mine.
-       Digital platforms such as gifs.
-       Including mockups of the final images into magazines , tote bags?, digital platforms- websites and gifs.

CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES
Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution.

Editorial artist will mainly inform my practice within this module. Looking specifically into the uses of certain image for high impact and sensitive topics. I will also be heavily relying on research that I am carrying out to gage others opinion on the topic and of which to form my own opinion. Also, designer such as Joe Malone who uses Lino as her main method of image making, layering and producing the images.
